I Just Ordered Geese

My gander does this but only to roosters and hes ripped feathers out of my turkey at the time think that had to do with dominance over size as she was a meat turkey or he maybe wanted to mate her im not sure lol
I LOVE TURKEYS.

I want turkeys eventually, too, but I am afraid of blackhead if I keep them with the chickens. Is your turkey housed with your chickens/waterfowl, or does it free range with the other birds?

My turkey lived with chickens ducks and geese never had an issue but she died from a heart attack she musta fell on her back and couldnt get up.

I ordered 1 female Buff and 1 female Toulouse from McMurray, and they get their waterfowl from Metzer, which suits me just fine. Metzer is only 3 hours from here, and my ducks arrived early. They'll ship out the week of 6/13, which is the first week of my summer break. Perfect! Lots of time to prepare before they arrive, and lots of time to spoil them once they do!

In March, the flock (my chickens, ducks and future geese) is getting a new, bigger 100sq ft coop with a new, bigger 1600 sq ft yard with a new, bigger pond. They will be allowed to free range when I can supervise (too dang many predators here). But I'm SO EXCITED!

149 days to go!

My only experience with geese is my pair of Buff girls. I LOVE them!

They wander around all day with my runners and chickens but house by themselves as night. They herd the ducks, and run from the chickens -- who knows why? Neither girl has ever nipped at me, although Golly has smacked me in the head with a wing a few times when she didn't want to be carried to her house.

Congrats on the bigger coop and pond. My girls would be so jealous!

I think it all depend on how you raise the geese. I had 2 Chinese geese many years ago, Larry and Lucy. I spent loads of time with them as they were maturing the first few months, picking them up and talking to them.

Then puberty hit, Larry started the hissing thing. Every time he did, I would scoop him up and say, "Larry! What do you think you are doing?" Lucy would "honk honk" at him in my arms. I'd hold him for less than a minute. After I put him down he was my normal, lovable a Larry.

He tried his act with everyone he met. If someone would just stand their ground, Larry just stopped acting up. BUT, if someone ran from him...different story. Larry loved the chase!
