And, I don't blame people for disliking some professors.

What is most people's biggest fear? The most common is speaking in public.

Most professors are the kind of people who spend hours researching and many hate having to speak in public, even when they love actually teaching. Some do get to thinking they don't get wet when they walk through puddles! I have met them.

Some get very burned out. Academic politics, and student shenanigans get old after ten years. Even DH, who I count on to give me perspective has gotten fed up with the excuses and bad attitudes.

Last week, I was ill and a student called and left a message. I e-mailed her back that I was losing my voice and ill could we talk via e-mail or the next day. I know she got it because of return receipt.

So, what did she do? She called me anyway. At home, at 9:30 at night. When I stated again I would prefer not to talk she started yelling at me!

Since then she has been insane and has "reported" me to the Dean. I know she's setting it up so if she fails (likely) she can say it was retaliation.

Some get crusty in self defense.

No excuses - just some explanation.

only 27% of Americans had a bachelors degree or higher.

That's why my number is unlisted. My time is my time. I have always had a lot of office hours for contact beyond the class. I don't answer e-mails on the weekends either. There is no such thing as an academic emergency, in my mind.

Of all the responses this struck me as most interesting. Quite the contrary is true. Neither of my parents had degrees. My father was a carpenter and my mother was a secretary when she went back to school.

If that's the case, I guess I don't understand why you thought that the percentage would be higher. As most here have said, they would have guessed lower.

Move forward from where? It takes people at all levels of education to fill the jobs that make a country run. If everybody has a BA or BS doesn't that lower the value of having such a degree?​

Sounds like you needed to spend some time on the other side of campus in the upper level courses after all the ones who in college "just because" are weeded out.

There are good and bad profs, some of the best teach as their thing, and some of the worst have 100+ papers published and their best class room audience is the chalk board because they still don't know how to use their computers. One of the biggest things learned was how to learn from many types of teachers. Be it the in class professors, the students in the class you are TAing, or the people you work with in research.

Dear Professor,

Iʻm sorry that I replied prematurely and didnʻt see your unfortunate incident ahead of time.

I can say with certainty that the inmates HAVE taken over the asylum.

I attended a Jesuit HS where we had to wear coats and ties to class every day. At my daughterʻs very ritzy and elite private high school, kids came to class in their pajamas. The Dean of Students accepts this because they are expressing themselves.

At my college, I was expected to make every class or come with a slip from the infirmary for any absence to be excused under penalty of my overall grade being lowered. At my daughterʻs large public university with a distinguished roster of international personalities, class appears to be optional since the professorʻs notes are on line and his lectures are on streaming video. Essentially, Iʻm paying $40K+ per year for my daughter to play on her computer between U-Tube sessions. And sheʻs an honor student!

At my law school, you expected to be verbally brutalized by every professor daily. This was the basis of the Socratic Method. From it we learned that white can be arguably be black and vice versa. In fact, if a professor took it easy on you, it was a good sign that he thought you couldnʻt take it and wouldnʻt make it. Iʻm sure in most schools today, any such professor would be summarily dismissed for not respecting the studentsʻ human rights and person dignity.

I donʻt know how we got to this sorry point, but I really fear that this generation, while smart, may not have any backbone. Lets hope they find one soon.

I dropped outta highschool... I honestly dont think it hurt me one bit. I do better than the so called "educated" folk at my job. Sure, I'm a fiddle playin, banjo pickin, overall wearin hillbilly, and I caint spell worth a dern, but without us farmers and ranchers, the "smart" folk would be screwed. Folks havin a degree dont impress me, nor has it ever. I aint bashin yall with the degrees, its just my honest opinion that yall really aint no differant than us... I mean, I know things that yall would never understand, or probly even care about, just like yall probly know a lot of stuff I couldn't care less about. Its just a little of paper seperatin the "smart" folks from the normal folks is all it is, to me anyway. So if ya think we're stupid, come do my job; I garantee ya you'd learn that we aint so dumb after all! I am gonna go to taxidermy school... Just for fun, mainly!
