I just rescued a baby trout or bass, Anyone with fish experience?

We had a catfish for 6 years. We caught him in a net as a baby. He lived in a HUGE fish tank in our living room but one night he broke (yes broke !) the glass. We got a new tank but he was so traumatized he died. He was as long as a keyboard and really fat but we couldn't bring ourselves to eat him

The pictures aren't good enough for a positive ID, but I can help you eliminate some possibilities. I got my degree in Zoology and did take Ichthyology, and am also a nature artist who illustrated a guide to California wild life (I got the fish chapter - granted, it was only California fish).

It may be a juvie bass. One way to tell for certain, ALL bass have a two-part dorsal (top) fin. The forward part will be spiny and the back part soft-rayed. Bass often swim with the spiny dorsal folded down, which may be why we can't see it in the photo. Redhead should take a close look at their fish - if you can't find a spiny dorsal fin on your fish, it isn't a bass of any kind.

I doubt it is a trout. ALL trout have an adipose fin. This is a small, soft, fleshy fin located between the dorsal fin and the tail. Your fish doesn't have one.

At first glance, my thoughts were that your fish is a Cyprinidae of some sort. This is the minnow, chub, and dace family. Without a better picture, it would be hard to tell what type. But almost all of the fish in that family do famously well as aquarium fish and don't get too huge. Many of the smaller species can be kept in as little as a 10 gallon tank.

Hubby and I caught a catfish in New York. He thought it was just so cute

So we took it home in our minnow bucket, stopped at petco on the way home for a tank.. We fed it koi fish food, and lived about five months till hubby cleaned the tank one day and must have put too many drops of something in there and the poor thing died... We burried it in the front yard of our landlords place (it was a duplex)

RIP Catty McFishster

He loved hiding in his fake tree trunk.
