I just set 5-21-11 in my home made incubator

I got my shipped in eggs today.

They came from AR, which is beside TN. It was as local as I could find. I ordered 12 and Mrs. Pickens sent me 14. Only one showed signs of leaking, but I candled and found the weak spot and dripped some wax on it. I'm gonna set it anyway and see how it looks later. The other 13 look just fine. She sent me 4 mille fleur calicos which I'm really excited about. Several different frizzles and some lemon blue splash with one red. All are cochin banys. Might get a few local mille fleurs and blue black splash cochins local to set with 'em, but I'm waiting to hear on that.

I'm gonna set tomorrow evening after dinner.

Hey Chicksntexas,
I'd recommend lowering that humidity. I live where it is humid also, and I think 30%, which they can get from the natural fresh air with no water in the bator is all you need in the first 18 days.

I think I'll try that matlock...the fan sucks out the water pretty fast, so right now it's sitting at 32%
I candled all 13 lav orps....6 had blood rings, 1 had a floating yoke. 2 swimmers! yay! 4 veins, but don't see movement yet. Sooooo...I tossed 7.....maybe I should just buy some chicks

I put the band-aid on the marans legs...boy he doesn't like that one bit! I'll give it a day or 2 and see how he does. We start physical therapy tomorrow

Well I just got done setting the cochin banty eggs.
Here's the pic....

The four with the red lines around them are mille fleur callicos, the four with the green lines are blue/lemons. The three in a straight line end to end are mottled frizzles, the 2 closest to the red wire nuts are splash frizzles, and the one loner is a red. I wanted more of the reds, but I'm jubilant to get one red one.

chicksntx,
I'm so sorry to hear about you losing the 7. I know you are probably getting frustrated, but don't get disgusted, each time you set you learn what works and what doesn't. It's not like i'm an old pro, but I just hate to see you getting all these disappointments all piggybacked on each other. I'm pulling for you. I'm rather interested in hearing about how the band aid works on the one, so keep me posted on that. Good luck with the 6 you still have.

Well I just couldn't help myself, it's been 24 hours now and I'm in day 2. I candled and 12 of the 14 are developing. getting the nice large yoke going on!

I can't hardly wait till later in the week to check back up on them. I bought a bigger cooler to put all my workings in, but If I get 2 near perfect hatches on this tiny thing, i'll be afraid to tear it down and remake it. I might just buy everything again to make the bigger one.
My hopes are high.
Has anyone else candled yet?

Set my 10 silkies last night. When I look in the incubator, it has a pink hue. Feels good. They are at 46 percent humidity in a dry incubator. 101 degrees as mine is still air.
I am doing everything by the book this time and hoping for a top hatch.
I have them in a room that no one lives in and no air will change. We have the air on, but I blocked the vent in that room.
Can't wait to meet my silkies.

All is good for my lav orps...temps & humidity steady...I am watching it like a hawk ! Should get my EE eggs sometime this week..yay!
The marans is doing good with the little band-aid. He's walking around well and even tried a little sprint

I'm going to keep it on him for another day or two. Looks like it's going to work!

Good luck Terry! Silkies are so cute!

wow 103, wish we had a bit more of a summer sometimes, at least the rain has stopeed for the last few days.

My incubator is stuffed to the gills and chugging away so i have my fingers crossed but i also have an egg under a broody. She tried to go broody about a month ago but this time she seems really committed to it so i didn't have the heart to chuck her off, thought i'd see how she went. today is day 7 and she is still not moving. I'm really excited. Might candle it today to check its developing but pretty sure it will be fertile. I've never used a broody before so this is very new to me.

The funny thing is, its not actually her egg and the hen it belongs to has started to camp out beside her. sometimes in the actual nest box, sometimes on the floor next to her. Do you think she knows its her egg? they are quite a funny bunch my girls. anyway last night i built a chicken wire partition to keep tallulah seperate from the others in the coop so hopefully Ellie will get over it and get back to laying.

DH says Tallulah looks like she's been run over - the way she squashes herself down over her egg, i think she looks like the perfect mum. might try and get a picture of her later. shes a pekin (think you call them cochin bantams) and shes my favourite although i know you're not meant to have favourites.
