I candled my shipped eggs when they arrived in the mail, and several of them looked odd. Some looked completely clear, some looked normal, and some looked cloudy and dark, with little bubbles inside

. There were 6 each of Serama and Cochin. They are on day 5 today, so I candled to check for development

. Only 1 of the Cochin eggs is developing

. All the others looked the same as when they arrived or worse. Upon opening them up, I found at least 3 that never did anything, and the rest were goo, and more than a little smelly

. So, out of 12 eggs, I have one left, which means my one egg cost $25

. I am not a happy camper

I'd be asking for my money back...

Good luck with the one who seems to be developing! I love Cochin chickens... they're so pretty! We had 2, a beautiful black one, and an absolutely gorgeous white one. Sadly a racoon took the white one this past winter, but we still have our beautiful black one. She's the only one we have, though I'd love to get more.

LaGeniaLoca...
I'm incubating shipped eggs right now too. Today is my day 7. I had read on here that when you receive shipped eggs you should let them rest in an egg carton with the pointy end down for 24 hours before you set. Well that is what I did, but I only ended up with 9/14 after one week. And what makes it suck is 3 of the four mille fleur callicos never formed, and the 4th one was a blood ring.

The only other one that didn't make it is the one that had a leak from shipping. I tried patching it with candle wax, but no such luck. I'm almost wondering if they didn't start to incubate in the heat. After the fact, someone on here suggested to me to put the eggs ( if shipped in 90 degree plus weather ), right into the incubator in the egg cartons with pointy end down, then lay them flat the next day. I wish I had done that... but I guess I'm happy with nine of fourteen on shipped eggs.
All my eggs are banty cochin. I have 1 red, 3 mottled friz, 2 splash friz and 3 lemon/blue.
It's not my ideal batch, but they are cute and if they all make it, I'll be happy. The air cells look great. I'm feeling much better with dry incubation.

Hi Ho hatching peeps! Lav orps are looking good! Had to toss one that started to get smelly...have 4 left now...3 for sure are growing well! AND....I just set 12 seramas! OMG the little eggs are so cute! Still waiting on the EE eggs...
LaGeniaLoca...I had same problem with last hatch...set 37, 3 hatched! DH told me yesterday...if we are ever going to break even on all of our chicken expenses...I will only have to sell 400 dozen eggs!

I probably should get some Leghorns then!

hi guys

well i candled last night and i'm really dissapointed none of the 5 sizzles i set were fertile.
sad.png
the lady i got them from (for free) did say she wasn't sure how fertile they were but i'm still really disappointed. not even one!

Still, out of the other 23 I only had to toss 4 that were clear which was good going, so now i have 10 orpington bantams and one big one, 4 cochin bantams and 4 rir bantams. fingers crossed.

My tallulah is still sitting but i candled her egg yesterday too and i think it may have died. the dark mass doesn't seem to be big enough and i'm pretty sure its the same as last time i candled. Oh i hope it hatches for her she has been so attentive. she has managed to get poo on the egg though, do you think that will be a problem? I have left her with it just in case but i am losing hope.

Picture to follow.

day 12! we're past half way folks

Pretty! I like your nest box!

thanks. they work quite well and are nice and easy to clean. they are heavy rubber sheep food buckets, i tried plastic washing up bowls but they were too light and kept tipping over so the girls wouldn't use them.
