I just want to scream and cry. Argh. Construction woes

No worries! I returned them. I can't believe I fell for that ridiculous "not correct" construction measurement. I mean, what the heck? Why can't it just measure what it's supposed to. Grrrrr. It all ended up ok....just time spent.
Pre-cuts are milled to that length to make walls easier and faster to build for construction. No cutting of every board.

In wall construction you have a single bottom plate (bp),pre-cut stud and a double top plate (tp). When adding these up you have 1 1/2" (bp), 92 5/8" pre-cut studs, and double 1 1/2" (tp).. this totals up to 97 1/8" total wall height.
Once you hang 5/8" drywall on the ceiling this lowers your wall height to 96 1/2". Drywall is 48" x 96", can then be hung vertically or horizontally on walls and by pushing it up to meet ceiling drywall this leaves a 1/2" gap at bottom. This gap is for ease of install, variances in lumber thicknesses and expansion/contraction so your drywall don't crack.

Like mentioned above a lot of lumber yards do place their pre-cuts next to 8' lumber in the aisle and people picking thru lumber will pile these up on the 8' stack and then not get put back and this allows the next homeowner/contractor to come in and grab and go, not seeing the length differences.

Glad it all worked out for you and wish you the best in your coop build. 👍

Did they confirm that they were precut studs?
What are the nominal dimensions...2x4, 2x6, 2x8....??

I have never seen this precut stud thing, but then it's been a long time since I bought lumber anywhere.
Pre-cuts are available 2x4 and 2x6. Lengths are 92 5/8" for 8' walls and 104 5/8" for 9' walls.
These are not pressure treated.

The previous post explains width and thickness, the below explains length. You can see that when you want the 96 inch, (8ft) product, you would have to select full length products. All of the products ending in 5/8 are what they call "precuts"

Hope this helps all who desire to build a coop themselves, which I highly recommend.

Nowadays you have to be very wary of dimensional lumber as the dimensions listed are not what you get. This is a good article which explains it all.

https://blog.spib.org/nominal-vs-actual-lumber-sizes/
Actual size for an 8' board in my area normally comes 96 1/2" in length. With dry kiln lumber there's always a variance and just guessing here but I'm sure they would rather you have to cut that 1/2" off then be responsible for selling short lumber resulting in returns. Pre-cuts are more quality controlled to be exact 92 5/8" for the building industry. There might be a small variance here which is unavoidable but hence the name "rough framing". 🙂

I mean, I guess it makes sense when it's explained. Thanks for writing that all out! I sure wish I had a little construction know-how, it would make this whole process much easier.

I have about 20 of them my son went out and bought at a lumberyard recently but instead of taking them back I'm ordering a Chinese chicken run on Temu to make a cat catio out of lol I'm using the studs to make different levels of catwalks inside the catio structure.
