I killed my first predators last night

Possum hide is extremely beautiful and soft...

They have an undercoat which is almost like cotton.

There is also a yarn available that is made with possum fur. Its very soft and fuzzy,

but I doubt that the possums sit still for plucking or combing like my goats and bunnies do.

Back to the topic, I haven't had to cross the dealing with predators bridge yet, hope I'll never have to.

I don't want to turn this thread to turn to name calling and sides drawn. I understand why some are upset, it is sad that their lives had to end, for what I'm sure you see as no good reason. I didn't do this lightly, We've been living with the local wildlife since we've been here. It's only when someone or thing of mine is in possible danger that we step in. That happened and steps had to be taken. I don't regret doing it, just that it had to be done.

Update. Yesterday afternoon I found the body of the other coon. I guess I did get it. It just took off so fast I thought I had missed. Dh burried it. It didn't get far so I hope that its death was fast. I just didn't see it at night. It make it maybe 20 ft from I shot it. I didn't see any other critters last night, so I hope it was one of them. I think we know where it got in and are fixing the problem.

I just wanted to say to the women here, I was always one who would let Dh take care of these types of things. It's the man's job and I could never do that, right. But that was before they took my chicky Dimples. The first chick we ever hatched, who liked to sit in my hand and eat grapes. It won't bring Dimples back but will possible protect the rest of them from the same fate.

I'd do the same thing Morgaine. They will just come back again! Nothing messes with my chicky babies either.

I'm glad we haven't had any predator attacks. I think my coop is built like fort knox so good luck getting in there anyway!

I'm a police officer. I just can't see me telling my husband "OMG! Go kill the raccoon! I can't do it!"

When we hear something go bump in the night, who do you think gets the nudge to get out of bed to check it out?

It's definitely not a male/female thing. I actually think I'd be more inclined than my husband to go out and shoot whatever was terrorizing the girlies. If it was a 10 point buck out there, absolutely he'd take care of that horned predator!

Well that's how I was, but I think you are in a line of work where you have already overcome those things that were holding me back. I don't handle guns much. I've shot that .22 maybe a dozen times in my life and that was only at cans. I can't shoot a hand gun at all, but with the riffle I usually hit the target 80% of the time. This was the first time I've ever actually ended something life on purpose and I wasn't sure how well I would handle it. There was a time when I honestly didn't think I could do it.

I didn't see it that way, don't worry. I guess I was just saying that I used to think I was one of those people who couldn't do it, but now I know that I can. It's a little empowering actually. Hubby says I'm on a killing high, lol.

no, just vindicated...... you've protected your animals from critters that would wipe you out now that they know where the new mcChicken sandwichs were walking around
