I knew free-ranging could be risky.......

Do you have a gun/rifle? If you don't I would get one and have it ready - predators usually return when they get hungry again. I would be sitting in the bushes < with rifle > waiting for him when he returns.
A chicken tractor is a great thing just make sure your wire is the strong very small squares type cage wire. I used chicken wire when I first started with poultry and met a predator that would put it's hand through the wire and pull off the chicks head trying to get them through the wire. I lost 2 silkie babies in one night. Also use fence staples instead of a staple gun to put the wire on the frame.
What a pretty hen, what a shame. I'm very sorry.
I have a live trap set all the time. I use p-nut butter for bait. I catch a lot of raccoons, ground hogs and opposums. Using a live trap where I am - I can take them a couple miles down the road and across the river then let them go without worrying if they will return.
You will learn a lot from your chickens and everything that goes along with them. Sometimes it's tough but I still think the enjoyment out weighs the tough times. I wish you the best.

Another reason I am soooo grateful for my LGDs! That was one bold coyote....we don't normally see them in the daylight here....I guess there are too many people around here with guns.

Pretty hen! I hope she comes wandering back out of the woods...

I hope she came back this morning. Sadly enough whether or not she comes back the coyote will. Keep the gun handy and only free range when you are present. Good luck!

We have an eagle that has been flying around since I got my three chickens. I only let them free range when I am there with them. The eagle got my neighbors cat and they blame me for it since it showed up for the chickens.

Sorry about your pretty little hen.

I am so sorry for your loss. My Henrietta was lost to a predator 2 days ago midday. I never thought one could get so attached to a chicken but I was so wrong. ..

Thanks again all for your kind words and advice.........

The shotgun is loaded and waiting.....

No sign of Scramble....has been 3 days so I am pretty sure I won't see her again......had a dream last nite that she was standing at the coop door this morning.......but it was only a dream........

The flock talked me into letting them out again for short periods of time .....I felt so bad making them stay in the run......I set my lawnchair up out there so I can be there with them.....never again will I leave them unattended - I owe them that much.....

4 eggs out of 6 girls today - - I am thankful.....
