You can also use round rocks about the size of eggs, and my grandpa used door knobs.

I used golf balls, because I had them, I also have a bowling ball, but chose not to use that because once it was in the nest box there was no room for the rooster to get in anyway. Next time I may use a small football....gotta think about this brown eggs/brown football, wait a minute chickens must be color blind because mine laid brown and white eggs with the golfballs, so color blind they must be.

Another possible "please lay your eggs here" sign would be to just use a hard boiled egg. They work great if you don't happen to have the usual wood, plastic, ceramic fake eggs handy. If the hard boiled egg is marked with an X on it you will know which one to leave in the nest every day.
