....but I am amazed at how sad I feel after losing a brand new EE overnight. I haven't even had her 24 hours yet. She seemed fine last night but this morning she was dead. Don't know what happened to her. I stocked up on chicks (more than I really need) in case of any mortalities and roos but its still a shock to lose your 1st one I guess. Must stay away from the feed store in my vulnerable state!

You can get a replacement if your chicks die within 24 hours or some "amount" of time.
Last year my polish just kicked the bucket... 30 minutes after I got hom and I just left the store 45 minutes before!

Figured you'd like a new peep!

I "want" one thats for sure, but I was going a little crazy on the numbers there and this is probably for the best, but still a little sad. When my son wakes up and finds out we'll see how much begging for a replacement starts happening-the feed store may be out of EEs by now anyway.....

It's so sad isn't it? They barely get to experience the world. I lost my first chick for no apparent reason. I also bought extras for the reasons you mentioned. DON'T GO BACK!! I did and came home with three more, one of which has a crossed beak. Now does that make sense? Get extras to account for losses....then replace your losses????

Wish someone would have given me a good old fashioned bop on the head!!

Hard not to go back and even my 10yo son is being realistic about it...... After I bought the last ones yesterday I made hubby promise not to let me go back until Chick Days are over!... He is being awfully good about the chicken addiction already-building me another coop, just 1 year after we started this whole chicken fun last spring, to accomodate all the new ones I've got in brooders in the garage. No need to push it! I just knew you guys would "get it". Although my family is being very sweet to me over it. Even got an extra big hug outta my big ole 16yo son!

It'll be okay that's what you bought extras for make everyone hold you to your promise and be strong for us who aren't

I have 4 Banty EE's and in my first time brooder and I have 6 Standard's on order that were supposed to be here before easter that's when I was weak and got my Banty EE's their banty's so they won't count offially... Not! I have to sell 4 to a coworker just so I don't have to build a bigger coop before my chicks go in the coop.

(myself smacking myself)

Is it just me ...or is there a lot of chick loss this year. One of my SLW died suddenly, with no symtoms @ 4 days old.

I got 3 BRs and 3 RIRs on April 7. 1 BR was dead next morning. I'd often wondered what my reaction would be to a dead chick - probably the reason I hadn't done it before. But I "womaned" up and accepted the fact, reluctantly and sadly, that that's what can happen some time.
Our store has a "no refund" policy which I respect since it's a private store and he has to cross the border to get day-olds (from McMurray, I think).
But I decided I wanted to get a new chick anyway, if he had ordered extras. Turns out he had, but no BRs, so I got another RIR.
Oh, and another one. So that it wouldn't be lonely on the way home? Sure, that's what I'll tell myself.
Luckily I live alone (except for the chickens, chicks, ducks and 3 dogs) so I don't have to justify the extra chick.
