I know it isn't a chicken . . .

What will you feed it?
From Wikipedia:

These diving birds forage underwater. They prefer water depths of 1.2-4.5 m (4 to 15 ft). In freshwater habitats they eat primarily insects, and in saltwater they feed predominantly on crustaceans and mollusks. Aquatic plants and fish eggs can often become locally important food items as well.

Well, I was hoping to have a little mallard baby this morning, but he's having difficulty getting out of the shell and I don't know if he's going to make it.

Maybe a little stuffed animal or a mirror in with him for now so he doesn't feel too lonely. I'd probably chop up a few greens really tiny to float in his water, but everything in moderation. If you can look around to see where he was found you might get a better idea of what he needs to eat. Are you near water?

Also, I'm a landlubber New Mexican and loons aren't common here, but I rescued an injured one on my highway. Loons can't walk on land. Can that baby walk on land? They scoot along on their bellies, propelled by their feet. If it walks, it's a duck or goose...

GOLDENEYE'S

13039_23804.jpg

Ranges all across the northern United States, Europe, and Asia. Drakes plumage is a distinct black and white pattern. Loud whistling produced by the wings while flying is characteristic of this species. Green sheen to head with circular spot near bill identifies it compared to the male Barrow's Goldeneye; females are similar. Nests in tree holes and duck boxes.
