i got him on 7-8-09. he didnt have a tail when i got him and as a matter of fact im not even sure what color or sex he is. im thinking male but wit out the tail i dont know.
i would also like to know since i just got him a couple of days ago i was wondering how long it could be until i could let him out to free range with my chickens and guineas. hes in a pen right now with two of my guinea males that i dont really need. i put them in there hoping he would have some friends to show him around.
i need to get a couple of peahens for him but i cant find any that are cheap.
i dont want him to be lonely so thats another reason why i have the guineas in with him.
anyway thanks to anyone that helps me.

Hmmmm, wonder if I could convince my DH it's just a really big colorful chicken? They are so pretty, until they scream like banshees.

hahaha! I have a really funny story about peacocks locked in a state park bathroom.

To the OP: I believe that to be a Blue India peacock. It looks like you can see a bit of his primary feathers, which look (from this picture) to be a more orangy color, indicating that it's probably a cock, hens primaries are a duller brown color. Also, cocks have slightly longer legs. If he's young (a yearling maybe?) he won't have a long train yet, they don't grow out all the way until they're 3 years old, and they molt them every year. I don't know much about them, but i've read a bit... hope the information is accurate, hope it helps!

I wish i could have peacocks

There's a nursery here that has some, and i make sure to buy my Christmas tree from them just so i have an excuse to visit.

thanks for the info jameberlin. i would also like to know at what time of the year does a peacock loose his tail and they what time do they start to grow back. and..... once i let him loose and he sticks around will he go into the (coop) or roost in the trees. i say coop like this because i have a pen on the outside of the coop. and well its facing towards the woods( he cant see anymore of where hes gonna be living at) and i dont know that. will he go into the (pen) or go into the coop. im not sure. this is my first peacock ever. thanks. cole

I'm no expert on them at all, but I have read that the males don't get a full "tail" or train (actually their back feathers) until they are three years old. They molt every year in late summer/early fall in the US. There are also sword feathers that get longer every year. That may help in figuring out his age. Hope that's helpful.

You are so lucky! I always dreamed of living on a huge property with peacocks roaming about and landing on rooftops. Good luck with him! He's gorgeous.

It is about a year or so old.My males are right at a year old and they look just like yours. If you let him out he may still wander. I have eight of them that I free ranged during the day, but now they are locked up because they wandered! AC came to my door the other day (very rudely) because mine had wandered over to the daycare next door. If he does not have a female when he is older he will wander more!
