I started letting my chickens free range, and they seem to really enjoy it! However, tragedy hit us this morning/lastnight!

I'm really bummed out... we lost our first-a Barred Rock Hen 'BR#8'. She never made it back to the coup last night, ..I had noticed that I could see the two OEGB on the roost which is unusual and I had a uneasy feeling. They get into the coop around 9:15PM.
How can we figure out what got to her and do Hawks usually swoop in the trees? I found a group of feathering on the ground, in the trees, no blood trail.

I have a garden and about six garden boxes that I'm trying to keep them out of."Trying" -any suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated! I though they would give good fertilizer for the garden, but DH read a artlicle of the 'horrors of chickens in your Beds'. I was really looking forward to using their fertilizer!

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I’m so sorry :( losing a pet is hard. If you don’t mind me asking what got her? I have had a few run ins with predators and can keep a few of them away now.

We have know idea as of yet what got her..I'm thinking a Bob Cat. There was a poof of feather on the ground one a clearing in the trees and then just few feathers trailed off..no blood, nothing!

i had a coyote get my rooster bruce:(so i know how hard it is feel better soon:hugs

So sorry! And Thank You!
I just feel like I let her down you know. I believe she was the one that took up for one of my little Sliver Duckwing OEGBs-she was standing in the run squawking and looking around. She let me pick her up and soothe her a little, she even took a little nap. So sad!

We have no idea at this point- there was only a puff of feathers on the ground..no blood, a few feathers trailed off from there but no blood- nothing.
