I lost my first hen today...

So very sorry. Had the same thing happen on Christmas Day. I posted here to ask what might have happened and a few people mentioned that sometimes they can break their necks just flying into something or coming down from a roost. I don't think that's what happened to mine, but maybe it happened to yours since you noticed her head being bent down.

Regardless, nothing you could have done about it, but you're right, it does burst the bubble. Good luck with your remaining flock.

I'm sorry

I lost my first hen last summer, it really crashed my confidence and made me think twice about being a chicken owner. All the other girls have been just great and I'm keeping my fingers crossed

for the rest of your flock as well.

I had EXACTLY the same thing happen this past fall--- found one of my Cornish girls dead--- It's hard when there is no explanation--- we finally decided it must have been a broken neck or some other trauma--- she was perfectly healthy the night before and there was not a mark on her when I found her--- it is tough but you did what you had to--- I know they are chickens but it is hard when you lose one.
