I love my Buckeyes!

Maybe this will be next year's breed

yes, you all know how dedicated I am to the Buckeye breed. For one thing, they are remarkably consistent in their behavior as chicks and grown up as the things people say about them are true for mine as well. I actually have to push my hens out of the way if I am doing anything and they won't wait for me to pour the feed in their feeders, they come and practically get over in my bucket and get under my feet. They are waiting for me at the gate every morning and actually crawl over one another to get to me (the hens). I have to push them back when I open the gate just to get in & keep scooting them back. I have stepped on a many a feet.

I will say that the roosters can go either way, i.e. be real friendly or can become quite aggressive; they too get right in the way and mine get easily insulted if I push them back out of the way giving that startled noise and sometimes then flaring their necks up at me-- they don't like it-- the rooster's friendliness can lead to them crossing that line. And also, my roosters come at me when I pick up a hen and if she squawks at me (I've seen my rooster chase a hawk, squirrels, and jump on a cat).

I have one cockerel that is the meanest I have ever seen. It is unfortunate because he has the best roar I have ever heard out of my males. I know my neighbors wonder what that noise is.

lol! Great information, thank you cgmcary! I will keep that in mind when I am selecting who to keep in the flock and who to let go.

We just got 14 Buckeye chicks about 2 weeks ago. Oh my gosh are they funny! They are definitely in the running for our most favorite breed so far!

All my chickens act just like you stated. In my way, on my back when getting the food, making me trip over them and they follow me across the yard. They are not afraid of me nor the dogs. I would rather them to be this way. As for mean or aggressive, they go in the deep freeze.

I love my chickens.

I went out to the coop yesterday with my camera. As I walked up to the pen where I have my "teen" birds, look who was the first to come to the door. Brutus is the Buckeye in the middle, and beside him is are his two sisters. They like to peck at my shoes when I go in the pen. I can pick them up now without them being a bit upset.

Here's a picture of my younger Buckeyes (six weeks old) and some Welsummers (six weeks also).
