I have 2 strays that live in the barn. My coop is inside my barn also. Neither one messes with the chickens. The one is definitely away more and skinnier than the other. Now, the other one that hangs around more, has gotten chunky. But this crazy cat thinks he is a chicken I believe!! Even though he has his own food & water in the barn, he will eat the chick feed and drink out of their waterers!!! He will perch with them and if I have younger ones, curl up with them in the brooder area. I really think him eating the chick feed has put all that weight on him. He will even try to lay in the nests on eggs!!! That of course doesn’t make me happy but I have caught him laying on eggs many times. So if all else fails, try chick feed! LOL

Now this requires a pictures or several.

Yes, he is skinny. He is the most feral out of all of them. I have just recently been able to touch him. He leaves for months at a time and returns when he is injured or sick. If he shows up at the back door, then I know he is hurt, so I try to give him meds as needed with the help of someone holding him. I can't trap him to take him to the vet. He is too smart for that. So I try to feed him in a private area away from the others. He eats a little then leaves. I wish that I could put some weight on him. I've tried. Any suggestions? I will try anything.

I have found over the years with ferals, that they tend to have that skinny look; even though they eat the same as the pet cats.
You could try worming, and mine have bulked up a bit with canned cat food 2x a day.
A bigger problem I've had is they usually come with kitty aids, or leukemia, and skinny could be a sign of either.
I'm pretty sure my latest "Notches" has aids, poor guy, wish I could touch him and take him to the vet.

I agree with you in that cats having aids or leukemia. I have been talking to a co-worker that works at a rescue and she said that same thing. I have tried putting out traps to trap him but he never goes in. If I could only trap him and take him to the vet so that they can diagnose him. Is there a cure (meds/treatments) for this?

We had a cat get it, kitty aids, and our vet said he could treat her symptoms, but afterwards she would have to be an indoor cat for the rest of her life. This was to keep her from catching anything, since her immune system was bad.

I hope he doesn't have it.

Kitty aids? was it aquired the same way as human aids?
