I love my sexlinks!

You're right, they're not the prettiest. I have one whose feathers were kinda rough when I got her. She went through a semi moult after that and was naked on her head. I got her in March of last year and her feathers didn't fill in until fall. Her head is still naked, but she never stops laying. Weird, but productive. I've just decided she's going to be bald-headed forever. This cost weather hasn't bothered her a bit.

Some of mine are gorgeously feathered, others look like they're in a permanent semi-molt but oh they are SO funny, talkative, curious and friendly, not to mention the JUMBO eggs they lay almost every day no matter how cold and dark the winter is! Some of the eggs are very dark too!

Ahh, Technodoll... That must be a breed trait. I have 3 RSL 2 full feathered - one semi molt. She almost looks crooked. But all three laid all winter long. Big and beautiful eggs. I live in B'ham Wa 20 miles from Canadian border, no artificial light either. Sunset can be 4:15 in Dec.
They keep going though. I might get 3 more this year?? No sure... a friend is hatching BR's if I want, their good but not as good as sex-links

My Gold Comets have been wonderful. They greet me every morning at the coop door and squat...

They started laying a bit late for the breed...about 21 weeks I think, but from day one of laying, they have each given me an egg almost daily. Even with the single digit temps, frozen water, and limited daylight. The BR and EE's in the pen have cut WAY back on eggs, but I don't have to worry with the comets taking up the slack.

Our red sex links range from gorgeous (ShowGirl) to dilapidated (Droopy), but like you say in posts above, they are the most personable, interesting, productive hens we have. One of our four is always first at the door or gate or treats hand out or whatever, and her three sisters are sure to be close behind her. They confine just fine, but race out the gate when they can free range. They hike all over our acres on free range, and never fail to make a pit stop on our back porch to visit and see what the special of the day might be. (suet seed cake, left over salad, bread crusts, yum!) If I step out the door and call for them, they come running from whatever quadrant of the yard they're grazing in, funny little waddle runs with wings out to the side, often squawking to outyell each other as they run. We may eventually settle in on a specialized breed of laying hen, but I'll never be without a cadre of little motley sex link hens. They are great layers and are undoubtedly my favorites! ~G

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks these gals rock

My BSL and CQ are egg laying machines. I love them. I can always count on eggs from them. I keep at least one of each, just for the everyday eggs.

I have five BSL's ordered and reading this thread makes me hope that they meet all of the expectations I have for them.. If what you say is true then we will have many eggs a day!!

Are they the best foragers as well? I read that they do. Thanks!

Your chickens are so quiet! My GSL talk and jabber all the time, especially when they have treats.
