I love our school district, I really do

I'm in Charlevoix county. We had a lot of threats in the elementary school until they stopped sending us home, quite a few until 2001 and then we didn't have another until 04-05. I guess it has gone back to about one a year since I graduated. It's a load of crap too. Kids will write a note, leave it somewhere obvious, usually the bathroom, and then everyone misses classes and lunch.
All the kids I know of who made threats were expelled. We even had one kid suspended for 2 weeks because someone over heard him talking about what he would do to protect himself in a school shooting.
Our school is kind of paranoid and they misconstrue a lot of things, all while not telling parents what's going on. My little brother had the police interview him and keep him in a private room in the school and out of class because some kid shouted that he had a gun. The kid wasn't reprimanded at all for making false accusations and wasting the police departments time, but my brother remained accused of bringing a gun to school even though he had done no such thing.

This is one of the weeks for Star testing, my guess is someone didn't want to do the test, and that the school was expecting it. Last year our test was interrupted by a swine flu outbreak.

Pipe bomb meant something different when I was in HS. About once a year someone would break into the science lab take some Lithium, then go to the bathroom. Wrap it very well in papertowels then drop it down a flushing toilet. When the water soaked through the paper towels; small kaboom and an expensive plumbing repair.

Imp-Same school where a science teacher spent the day teaching us how to make a nuclear bomb with items from the hardware store; except for the fuel, of course.

And No it was not in Pakistan.

I used to remember having fire alarms going off so we all go outside and wait, whenever a cherry bomb or two went off in the men's restrooms in high school. Nothing really unusual about it but sometimes they never caught anyone doing it or find someone who might have done it. We all liked getting some time out of the classroom, particularly the boring ones!

With stuff happening nowadays, more guns and high class bombs in schools, it makes you think the ones you had when you were growing up wasn't anything CLOSE in what we have today. One bomb can take out one wing of a school or take out one floor or two if it is a high rise.

The school has a responsibility to inform parents what is going on with the school and what measures they are taking care of to keep our kids safe in school. If the media is doing the coverage, then the school has not done their job. I know it is ALOT of parents to call but sometimes some of them do have broadcast systems in place that it would fire off emails and phone calls all at once.

One of ours schools was on lockdown last week because of a 'hit list' found along with details of the plan. I heard about it on FaceBook :thud

It didnt make the news either. I hope this is because we all know media hype worsens the situation and not because we are complacent.
