I am so happy with my chickens! We are new to raising chickens and I am a city girl who has just learned to garden, can and now raise chickens in our small backyard.
We have six and they are 16 weeks old. Four days ago I heard this racket going on out in the run. Normally our pullets are quiet. I ran outside and one of our ladies was singing this loud buck buck baawwwk. Right below her toes was this beautiful little brown egg. Whoo hoo! I know its corny but sheesh..I felt like singing with her! We were worried that she would never figure out the nest box but that evening she sang for us again from the nest box! What a clever girl! Daily she has laid these perfect little eggs. Each day the egg size seems to be increasing. I am so proud of her. She is named after my mom..lol.
Hopefully our other chickens will follow her lead and all be singing for us soon and leaving us their eggs in the next box.
Just had to share this..I do not know which sound I love more..the ping I hear right after I have canned some fresh produce from my garen..or that lovely song my chicken sings. I sure hope when all six or our girls start singing ..they harmonize so our neighbors don't complain..

I am still so new at this that each time I hear her doing her song..I start laughing. I hope the day never comes that I take that song for granted.

I know exactly what you mean. I can hear my hens when I'm getting ready for work in the morning. Our two Red Stars lay first thing and when I hear the song I always smile and quietly thank them for providing such a wonderful gift. Like the ping of lids when canning I don't think we will ever tire of it. I was thrilled to death when I saw one of the hens squat and drop her egg. This hen however didn't sing but jumped down and got a nice big drink of water. I thought to myself if I just did that I would want a drink of water too!!! You just got to love them.

Ok, I thought they Sang as they were just about to lay!!! Nope, not my chicken little....she is my smallest hen...RIR...she sang 15mins BEFORE she laid, and then I stayed to watch her, I have her in a large dog kennel the Roos were hurting her...she squats down and then quivers her vent and pants...lays...saw it today for the very first time~~~

I thought I was the only one!!! I

I heard it for the first time Monday morning and we had our very first egg. Now I lie in bed every morning waiting to hear her again. So far nothing. But I know it won't be long until I am serenaded each and every morning. Congratulations and enjoy!!

Great stories!

For some reason, the egg song always stresses me out. I always feel like my hens are freaking out about something. When we had a rooster, he used to pace back and forth in front of the nests while the hens laid, and he sang the egg song! It was pretty funny, but also stressful. Sometimes my hens will call to each other--one from the nest, another from outside the coop under the bushes where they like to congregate. It makes me nervous--they sound upset. I prefer their mellow little clucks. Crazy, huh?

I love it too. This is the first time I've ever had chickens. When I said I was getting them, all I heard from people were negative comments. My mom and step dad think I'm crazy cuz I enjoy them so much. I only wished I'd gotten them earlier.

Wait until they purr. That sound is even better.
