UPDATE:
After a lengthy discussion with family we're going to hatch the chicks. I am ashamed I even considered pulling the plug on them. Thank you my BYC family for reminding me that I have chickens because I LOVE chickens not for any other reason.
Update :
Seller replied they were unable to get good photos of the birds they own but swears the photos they borrowed resemble the parents of the eggs they sent. I will post photos here after the hatch. I believe it's 4-6-17.
This is what happened. I bought eggs from someone who I assumed was a breeder, only to find out the photos of the breeder birds are birds that were gleened off various sites on the internet . The REAL kicker is, of the 14 eggs I was sent 13 have embryos and I'm at day 8. I was shocked at candling that many took! So I looked online at photos of what my chicks might look like. That's when I discovered that the photos belonged to other people.
My question is should I continue with the hatch? I paid decent money for pure breed chicks and I'm torn about what to do. Do I hatch the eggs and rehome the chicks if I can find homes , selling them at a fraction of what I paid? (Yes! stupid me, I paid $12 a egg for 12 plus I got 2 free) Or be forced to give them away for free If as I suspect they'll be sub standard and or mixes. I already have plenty of mixed chicks and chickens. No one wants to buy mixed birds other than sex links. These were going to be the start of my Serama flock. So what to do? Do I turn off the incubator? Chalk up the whole situation as a horrible decision on my part, the money lost and a lesson learned?
I can't help thinking of all those little heart beats. Is it better to end them now? Sigh.
I Contacted the seller to explain about the photos, some are 6-7 years old from show birds from across the sea. How they can be their breeders? I'm still awaiting a response.
I can't fault people for trying to make some money especially these days. Just because they had a facebook page doesn't necessarily make them legit. I should have known that. I do know this is my fault for not taking more time to ask a lot more questions! I will offer a word of caution on doing any kind of business on facebook, eBay or Craigslist ect do your research, research and more research before you invest hard earned money in hatching eggs!
Thank you all for being a sounding board. This has caused quite a bit of stress here at home. Some folks don't understand the love of chickens. I'd keep them all if I could afford the feed.
