i may be getting a pet deer but i need help

I am younger, ( a teenager ) but my parents may be the one getting the permit i am just helping them figure out how. Yes i have seen the yearling and i read the book. The fawn is shot because he is eating the crops that the family depends on. i dont have any crops for the deer to destroy and there is basically nothing it could do if it jumped the fence. I am not sure if the owner right now has a permit but i will see him sometime this week and talk about it more. I honestly cant think of a reason not to not get her. I have the space and the time and there isnt much for her to escape and do. I would just keep her in the pen with my sheep and my livestock guardian donkey. This doe has been dependent on humans since birth and she knows what they want her to do. she comes when you whistle and eats from your hand. Either way, i wont know if it possible the guy will even give it to me until the end of the week. he has to talk to his wife and son to decide what to do. The only reason they are giving her away is they dont have a pen for her and she roams around the yard like a dog. The deer is eating all the flowers out of the flowerbed and making the wife mad so they are going to make a decision and let me know.

Please know that most states will not grant you a permit to keep this deer. These permits are for "farm raised" deer. A native wild animal cannot be legally kept as a pet no matter the circumstances. If you are reported to authorities, your parents (since you are a minor) will face a heavy fine & possibly jail time. Also, the deer will be destroyed ...as in killed ..since she cannot be expected to survive in the wild. I suggest your friend contact a wildlife rehabber who may be able to get this deer "unaccustomed" to people & be returned to it's natural enviroment.

I truly understand that you are just wanting to help & I'm sure you would give this deer a loving home....BUT...the fact is that you just can't. Yes, your friend has gotten by with it up until now...BUT...it's a question of WHEN not IF you get caught. Are you willing to cause your family heartache & financial distress?????

"These licenses are not issued for the purpose of holding native wildlife as pets" STRAIGHT from the GA DNR page. If I could put that in larger type, I would.

What you are aspiring to do is neither legal nor best for the deer.

As much as I know you will love her and give her a great home, I agree with those who say to give her to a rehabber or someone else involved with wildlife. They probably won't release her right away, if at all, but will do what's best for her and it will keep everyone out of trouble with the law. Perhaps you can also volunteer to work with the rehabbers, too, and help them help her.

boykin2010; I'm sure you would take as good care of her as you possibly could, but she will not have a fulfilling life living in a pen with sheep and eating from your hand. A fawn can be so cute and seem so tame, but she is still a wild animal and when she grows up, will want to do what grown deer do. She will not be a pet and will not be content to stay penned.

The point of 'The Yearling' was that everything changes when you grow up; deer and teenagers...
