Both exciting and frustrating! I didn’t want any more babies but when she went broody I said what the heck. Let’s give her some eggs! If all goes well they should hatch this weekend or Monday, but twice in the first week she was off the nest long enough to let the eggs go cold.

It happens. They are probably fine. Good luck and have fun watching those babies grow

Well if I think about it I don’t have a problem. My chickens have a problem since they are the ones that want to have babies. I’m not buying babies or hatching in incubator. So I should be exempt from having a problem. Right?

I unfortunately cannot fulfill my chickening dreams because of my parents, but I wish I had breeds that would go broody! I currently have one leghorn and 3 red sexlinks, and am going to build a bigger coop and get 4 new chicks in the spring. One of those will be a cochin, but I don't think I'll be able to spring for more than 8 chickens in total. I suppooooooooooose I could build big enough for 10 then give madame cochin 2 if she goes broody, but I probably won't be able to pull it off. One of them going broody might be a good excuse to get more on my part, though.

Letting a broody do all of the work is pure magic. I have brahmas, EEs, barred rocks, leghorn, a penedesenca, a welsummer, and an Americauna. The Americauana has been broody three times, the welsummer once. None of the others have ever been broody.

We have been contemplating converting a shed into an XL coop to house some secret hens...no one can see our run from the street and if they only see 6 at a time there's only 6, right?

I struggle to count my own hens I kinda doubt strangers would take the time to count but better to be safe.

(Yeah we can't afford that...rn we can only rent or land contract too.....but honestly why would you want to give it up? If you're interested in doing a land contract or something we should probably continue this in a private message thread)
