I must admit, they're more fun than I thought they'd be.

I'm a new chicken owner in Spokane. My 10 year old begged for a few chickens, and I'd been interested in having a small flock in our urban neighborhood. We picked up four Polish day olds as a straight run (lost one), and tried to incorporate them into a flock with three Ameraucanas, two Black Copper Marans, and one Legbar. That didn't work. And my child who refuses to accept that chickens kill each other, insisted I get them their own coop so they could stop getting their butts kicked. So I threw in two silkies for her to have fun with. So now my working girls are in the back and the ridiculous poultry free range in the front yard. Thankfully we're on a large corner lot and own the house next door as a rental so they have over 10,000 sf to range on (plus the yard after that, they don't mind). People love to watch them as they go by. So far so good.

Hello there and welcome to BYC! :frow

Yes most people have no idea just how much fun chickens are to keep. And there more time you spend with them, the more friendly they become and the more fun it is!

You did good by giving the Polish a place of their own. Polish rarely mix well with other breeds of chickens. They look different with their crests and get picked on. Sorry you lost one. :hugs

Make yourself at home here and we hope you enjoy BYC! :)
