I must be getting popular with the cops...

During the holidays it's fairly standard procedure. It has nothing to do with how you're dressed -- I haven't worn any hoodies, but have been asked to show my receipt on the way out. Usually on the weekends when the crowds are larger. I show my receipt to get out of Costco, so I don't think twice about it. Well...... except for the time a few years ago that the guy at the door was watching me as I checked out and THEN asked to see my receipt even though I didn't have anything that didn't fit into a bag, it wasn't the holiday shopping crunch, and he'd seen the cashier bag everything. That was irritating.

Sounds like a busy body who had nothing better to do than pick on the gal wearing knives.

I personally love knives and/or swords. I am also quite accurate with them. Go with what you are comfortable with and to heck with the idiots around you.

Funny story to make you smile...I lived in a tri-level several years ago in NC. I came downstairs in the middle of the night to get a glass of water. There was a full moon and there was no need for the light to be turned on so I walk into the kitchen and something ran under my robe.

I felt this tail whip around my ankle and I freaked out. I grabbed my carving knives out of the knife block and began hurling them at this critter. When DH and DS came running into the kitchen and turned on the light...a sight was to behold.

ME standing backed into the corner with knife in hand and across the kitchen a possum was skewered to the cabinet door...dead and bleeding everywhere!

DH says "Honey...what have you done? What a mess"

DS says "Mom, did ya have to kill it?"

I was furious with them as I thought one of them left the doggie door open...until I saw the wolf...he was slinking away to his bed. Apparently, he had caught possum and brought it inside to play with ot. When it played dead he became bored and left it alone. Meanwhile possum wakes up and is trapped in the house and we collided in the dark.

So there is nothing wrong with carrying a knife or two.

I'm a peace loving lady myself but as I live in the jungle where I often need to slash my way through I too walk around with a machete. My opinion only but seems to me you should be able to walk around your own property with whatever you want. I think it was great that you kept handing your dogs to the cop and you did let him see that your animals were all happy and well fed. Maybe he learned a little that day. Aloha from Hawaii

I would just post a reminder that carrying any knife greater than three inches (usually, the length may vary in your area) concealed on your person is a crime. So in areas (other than on your own property) where you aren't allowed to carry the knife in full view of the public, I would not try concealing it from view either unless you are licensed to do so.

In thier defense, (and I am NOT saying this is what happened, as I was not there, however) Police officers have to deal with all types, and they are trained to take control of a situation from the first word. Unfortunately, for some young cops who havent smoothed out thier technique yet, that means they often come off rude. A more polished individual has learned that you get more flys with honey than vinegar, but it is a hard skill to learn.

Try to step back and look at the big picture, if you can. He recieved a complaint that someone was abusing an animal with a machete. If you heard that over a radio, what would your gut do? (I would go into hyper protective mommy mode) Now picture from a strangers point of view, (in protective mode) What kind of image did you portray when he first saw you? You can not put your self out a certain way and then get upset when people react to your projected image!

Whether you are on your own property or not, a machete is not a common hand tool, and will create reactions. Certainly carry it, use it, it is a tool, I have one myself. However, be honest with yourself about how you expect people to react to the presence of such an item. Carry a scythe, and people will call you the reaper.

its hard when our feelings are hurt or offended to not act rude, and believe me, the cop was aware of your umbrage. But he still did his job, and did it well, he looked around, and then went and wrote a report saying the complaint was falsely based, and you are just a wierdo who carries big knives while walking your dog! What more could you want?

Training a dog always get wierd looks and reactions from people who dont understand that a healing excersize often entails a few sharp jerks on a collar, and with an obtuse dog, well, sometimes those jerks get downright firm! Been there done that! But just imagine what thier dog walks on a leash like, do you suppose it heals for them? A well trained dog is worth his weight in gold, Just smile and wave, and correct.... What else can you do?

Good Luck, and try not to be too hard on the cops, they have a rough row to hoe, and not one I would want!

When I lived back on the other side of the state, we had some neighbors that were out to cause trouble for us. Our street had parking only along one side, and unfortunately for the neighbors, it was their side. They got tired of our cars being parked on the street in front of our house (but on their side). I had just given birth to my first child and was stuck in the house recovering for a few weeks. As such, I was unable to get out and drive, and really had no reason to do so. They called the police and reported my car. There was an old law for the city that stated a vehicle on the street has to be moved at least once every 48 hours. We had no idea that such a law existed, and I have a feeling neither did they. They most likely found out when they called the police up to complain. My car was not junky, rusted or nasty looking in any way. I got a $50 parking ticket. So I then made sure to get out and move my car once every 48 hours. I moved it back and forth into different parking spots in front of their house. Keep in mind that our household at 5 vehicles and someone always had to park on the street. They reported me again, and again I got another $50 ticket. I tried to fight it and even went to the courthouse (there wasn't a very fair judge on the bench that day). Finally, when these neighbors tried reporting my uncle's car (who was living with us at the time), a police officer came up to our door to discuss our violations. Unfortunately for the neighbors... my uncle had just gotten off of work and had his time card at work to verify he was there. At that point I countered the officer and stated that these neighbors were harassing us, and asked if she would kindly let them know that if they don't cease and desist, we were going to sue them for quite a large sum of money. She relayed the message. That was the last we heard from the police regarding parking on that street. If they send the police to your house just one more time, I'd be very likely to go down and lodge a complaint against them for harassment.

Heresay doesn't mean your guilty of any crime. Cops should treat everyone with respect until they break a law. Just because someone says you did something wrong and there is no evidence the cops don't have the right to give you an attitude. They are public servants, not public harrassment officials.

well...i wouldnt be rude to or mad at him...sorry....he was doing his job...he had a call about animal abuse...he went to check it out...

...actually i'm glad that he went and checked it out..and also...sometimes people respond to you HOW you are responding to them...maybe YOU had a bit of an attitide when you saw him on your property..and then he was asking you about abusing your animals?..
hu.gif
....i KNOW i would not be happy if that happend to me..so....maybe it wasnt ALL his fault?...
