Really nice. I did an 8 x 16 too. Considered a gambrel roof and instead went with 6:12 pitch conventional with 12" soffit. That brings me to what I wanted to say.
It looks to me as if there is not enough ventilation for the size of that building. Can be a problem in winter when windows must be mostly closed to prevent drafts. I was going to suggest making the triangle at the peak on each gable end the entire vent for each end. After scrolling down I see that is too late now. With my soffit vents, gable vents, and turbine vent, I have 6 sq ft ventilation full-time, above the walls. With that I am able to close all 4 windows tight for the night when it is cold. No sweating or humidity. With my 4 windows open, I have well over 40 sq ft ventilation with doors closed.
If no rear window, I would add one for good cross-ventilation and have both open during some daytime hours in wintertime. I would also add a large turbine vent to top center. Ventilation is far more important than coop heat. Only chicks need heat, and that can be done by enclosing their little space within the larger coop.
great ideas thanks! We do plan on adding another window and a fan soon.It gets smelly in there and I know its not healthy for them. I will probably use my Christmas money to get what we need LOL.
It gets cold in there but nothing like outside! Went to feed and water this morning and the bottom waters were frozen. Not frozen solid but enough so they couldn't get water. The chicks on top have the heat lamps but is still chilly.Should I put a small heater in there or will they be ok?
How old are the chicks? A thermometer is a chicks best friend, at least that's what the hatchery tells me. It is impossible to know what the temperatures are without one. Do they all stay piled up right under the heat lamp? Then they need more heat. Do they spread out and scratch and act like chickens? Then you're probably OK
