I need a disagreement settled.....about watering your grass.

+Cut the grass high as possible.

He did admit he needs to cut it higher.

I do not have it on automatic system....we just use a sprinkler and do it manually.

That's DH's take too. Funny that there are so many places that have the watering bans, but then there was that little old lady who was just persecuted because she DIDN'T water her lawn (too high a bill on a fixed income)... y'all remember that stink?

I've heard of the bleaching thing... I just sort of picture the grass getting poached (since it's water instead of grease) so that's never been a stretch to think it's possible. Glad to see I'm not the only one who believes in the evap thing though...

I agree with Sonoran Silkies, water early, deeply, and not too often.

Lawns and grass-----Some co-workers were sitting about and discussing the various methods of dispatching and ridding their lawns of moles with the unsightly tunnels and dirt mounds. I said " You could just do what I do and cut the grass as high as possible, at least 6 inches" How does that eliminate moles, they asked: " I don't know, but I can no longer see their tunnel runs"

Water in the evening so you don't burn the grass when the sun comes up. Works for me.

I didn't read the answers you got already, but watering the grass during the day will actually burn the grass (maybe that's what you mean by bleaching it?), and make it yellow and crispy. Watering when the sun is low is best whether in the evening or early morning. Did see that this was posted - longer harder soaks are better. Let the water really get deep into the grass rather than wasting your water on only the top layer of soil, and not actually reaching the deepest roots.

Early morning or evening is best for watering although evening watering can sometimes lead to fungus problems. This goes for patio plants, gardens and grass. Watering when it's really hot out and during the middle of the day can help save a plant from completely drying out and dying....but it isn't good to do your main watering then because more water is absorbed via evaporation and the plant doesn't get as much. Any kind of moisture on your plants-water or pesticides, + sun can result in a sunburn on your plants because it magnifies the suns rays.

Hope that helps.

This is exactly right! I am an avid gardener and have taken many classes on the subject and the only thing I'd add is that watering during the day can burn the grass on a very hot day. Water early am. If you have automatic sprinklers set them to start their cycles at 4am. Depending on how large your yard is this should mean it will be finished well before the day starts to warm up. Giving the water time to be absorbed. If you don't live in a humid area, night watering is fine too and can even help ward off frostbite in winter (although it will encourage snails and slugs).
Good luck and happy gardening!

You can get a timer at lowes or homedepot that will turn it on even with out having a full irrigation system. Another benefit for watering at night is pressure. Your sprinkler will get more "bang for the buck" when you aren't competing with showers and flushing toilets.
