I suspect anyone who says they don't like female authors really doesn't do that much reading. But in the any case, here are some boy authors, but not really any southern ones...

Old authors, some whose books might be hard to find: James Oliver Curwood, animal stories about the Northland; Jack London, Max Brand, westerns; P. G. Wodehouse, John Steinbeck
Newer authors: Jon Hassler, Bill Bryson, John Grogan, William Dietz, Christopher Moore, who is very very funny;

For some good non-fiction reads I've enjoyed The Hot Zone by Richard Preston, Last Child in the Woods, A River Runs Through It,

How about some scottish authors??

Christine Marion Fraser does a good Rhanna series, think there are 7 books, she also has a Kinvara series and a 'Kings' series (this one was my favourite)
Emma Blair
Do you like Tudor?? Phillipa Gregory?
Funny? Marion Keyes
Rosamund Pilcher, thats kind of romancey/feel good

If you like history and witches there is a good book called Corrag by Susan Fletcher that is about the Glencoe massacre, but if you don't like scottish history it's useless, lol!

I almost forgot another fave of mine, Bill Wallace.
Although his stuff may be a little bit more for young people, I loved Beauty, The Red Dog, and Pick Of The Litter.
(But this is coming from someone who still likes to read Little House books.LOL)

Averaged a novel a day from age ten to age forty. A job change at age forty; that required me to read "the fine print" all day, plus old eyes that required reading glasses, kind of curtailed my reading.

My mom was a librarian and my wife is a librarian, I just think people like to read a voice that they can relate to. In my case it is southern male voice.

I've read a lot of the stuff already mentioned. You could also try Philippa Gregory, Carolly Erickson, Karen Moning and Kay Hooper.

spy novels are my favorite. John La Carre is my fav author.
The spy who came in from the cold and the trilogy with Smiley are great, but the night manager and the constant gardener are tops too.
