In that case see if they have Cornish bantams, my hens are not noisy, and their eggs are larger than my other bantams. Two eggs from a Cornish bantam hen would make a healthy breakfast for one person.
MPC has standered cornish. (i'm lucky, they just got them for 2010) are they loud? well, if you people could find another hachery that will allow mw to order a small amount of day-old sexed bantams i could find better breeds.
Personally I don't worry about the sexing, it is not accurate, if you order three you will likely get one roo. You can order a small order from Ideal of bantams as long as it meets their minimum, and then give away the roos. And still probably be within the same ballpark as MPC. I believe the minimum order is $20.00 not including shipping, that is about 8 birds in most cases. Or you can hatch out some shipped eggs yourself, their are many bantam breeds available as hatching eggs for reasonable. Again giving away the roos should be no problem.
I have been able to sell my excess roos from shipments anywhere from $10 to $15 a roo, but then that is to the Hispanics who then butcher them.
I looked up MPC order site and their is a $7.00 additional charge for female bantams. Most cases that would be $10.00 a chick, hardly worth it and then you still have the chance of getting a roo. Order from Ideal or one of the other hatcheries and then give away the roos. There is a reason they charge that much to sex bantams as it is very difficult, which means the accuracy is even lower than standards. It will cost you $20 for two bantam female chicks from MPC, and then chicks should really be shipped with other chics to keep them warm.
