Hello,
I am a backyard chicken owner with more experience in three years than anyone should have to absorb. Wilco Farm Store calls me when they have questions. This is all because I purchased chicks who were sick and lost over 20 of my girls. I was fortunate enough to be able to take dead and one live girl to Oregon State University for necropsies and from there, gained a wealth of information from one of our countries leading poultry veterinarians. She was amazing. Due to the way my whole tragedy came about, the folks at OSU were genuinely saddened by what had happened and I cannot say enough about them.

With this said.....
I have a three year old Millie Fleur who I noticed was getting a pale eye. This was about four days ago. Today she is perched with her tail feathers down, very subdued, and I know something is terribly wrong. She has a sister from birth and they are inseparable. My sick girl has separated herself when the rest of the flock comes in for bed. She hides in the corner of one of the nesting boxes. TOTALLY not her.

I have done all the usual things. She is separated. Warm. She is eating and drinking. I have given her a bolus of Vitamins and Vet RX. I am only offering her medicated chick feed (I will get to town tomorrow for appropriate antibiotics if I feel they will help after hearing y'all's thoughts). I made her some eggs with garlic. She gobbled them up. I just went to check on her and she had a solid white poop. I have not seen this type of poop before. I have checked for mites and see nothing. They were all wormed after my horrific experience in September and I intend on worming them again in two weeks (was advised to do so twice per year being where I live and what I have gone thru). Otherwise, we do everything organically.

Thoughts? I have learned a lot. But the white eye added to this behavior change is something new. And it could be that I am dealing with different symptoms of the same Sh#%* disease my girls are all carriers of at this time.

I am open to any suggestions you may have. She is one of my original girls. I started with 8. And, I really don't think her sister can live without her. I am sad but I am realistic at this point because of what we have gone through this past year.

White eye
lethargy
white, solid poop
standing in one position and not moving.
eating and drinking well.

Is she scratching it? Is her eye closed?

One of my chickens had mereks disease which caused an infection in her eye and eventually went to her brain. I would take her to a vet as soon as possible just because I took my chook to the vet too late and it was incurable. if it is closing and looks a little bit infected, try washing it with salty water until you can get to the vet, but be careful because I tried that with my sick chook and she scratched her eye so much that her face was raw and scabby and there was no way her eye was going to ever open again. So if you try it and see her scratch her face don't use that method again.

She may even have been pecked in the eye. A lot of my chickens have had that happen. If you notice some of the other chickens pecking her eye, and nastily pecking her, seperate her immediately so no more damage can be done to her.

Can you please send a photo of the eye and I will see if it looks like what my chicken had
also is she the runt?

I hope your chicken gets better :jumpy

Welcome to BYC.
Are you familiar with Mareks disease?
Thank you. Yes, unfortunately I am VERY familiar with Mareks. She is just not displaying ANY of the symptoms of the three types of Mareks I was poisoned with. Im not trying to be snarky. But I know more than the average joe about Mareks. I was given all three; dermal, visceral, and occular. But, we have managed the flock with the help of the university and this little beauty is not being typical in any way, shape, or form....

No scratching. Eye is totally open. I am sorry for your loss. This is the most traumatic feeling ever. Thank you for your input. I appreciate and learn every day.

Photo of eye would help. What disease were they diagnosed with? Where are you?
I will upload photo in a few min. I was given all three strains of Mareks along with a multitude of other horrific illnesses. It has been thee most devastating experience I have ever dreamed of. But, I have learned more than most thanks to the University of Oregon.
