I need feedback on Purina Layena Sunfresh layer feed!

I just special ordered a bag of Layena Sunfresh feed from the feed store just to try it out and was wondering if it's worth the $20.89 price tag, compared to the $14 layer feed that I usually get. Is it worth the extra money and does it turn the yolks that orangey color that it claims to do? Thoughts?

Is it worth 67% more? Not to me. I'd just feed em cabbage and greens to get yellowy yolks and go with the $14 stuff.

I am picking up my special ordered bag of the same tomorrow.

I have certain requirements:

The hens must LIKE it!

It must have all the required nutrients.

I am concerned with the 16% protein amount. So I am planning on getting a bag of Purina Flock Raiser (20% protein) and mixing the two together. Of course I have crushed oyster shell available free choice at all times, so calcium amount isn't going to be an issue. I might even get a higher % protein food, not set my mind yet. The girls have been raised on 23% protein and I can attest to better and stronger growth than any of my other flocks have ever had.

I get Purina gamebird startena and turkey grower. My girls get a lot of green stuff from the pasture and and I just didn't feel as though they were getting enough protein. Their feathers didn't look as nice and the eggs just weren't as good.

The Startena is 30% protein and the turkey starter is 26%. They also both have some animal products in them. I jsut don't feel as though chickens were meant to be vegetarians.

I have just started this feeding plan so don't know if it will help egg production or feather quality....

My hens are laying well on Layeena, but 50# only costs $12.50 here.

After reading a lot about protein content, I wish the protein content was higher than 16%, but since my chickens rarely log onto this site I think I'm okay.

It's out of my budget...Layeena here is $13.50 + 6% tax...so that and occasionally free range to cut the feed cost down....100 years ago a chicken got what spilled or passed thru the cow and they survived. Modern times have spoiled the chicken because we are afraid that we might be doing something wrong....go figure. My chickens will not eat Scratch either...
