I NEED HELP ASAP W/ BABY DUCKS!!!! EMERGENCY!!!! final update pg 6

I'm no expert, by any means, but I've found that the mallards are smaller in size than some of the other ducks that are bred for size. Just a thought.

Good luck... you've been so good with him, and I'm so sorry about the others. It happens despite our best efforts sometimes. :aww

Any kind of call duck or bantum duck would probobly be small enoughf and
when they get older they will be about the same size.

you have done a great job taking care of him.

thank you all so much for the kind words,i wish i could have saved them all if not at least 1-2 of his buddies so he wont be lonely!! i will keep you all up to date on how he is doing.

Can you get your hands on a chick waterer? So he can't get into his water? These little things are tinier than their fluff would have you believe and I think that a hole small enough to prevent him from getting into would not intrigue him enough to seek water out of. I would take all that long grass out of there. Take that yogurt container and cut it down more to about one inch all around. Take about 2 tablespoons of the duck starter and add warm water, swish it around and make a soup. Dip his beek in it and hopefully he will catch on. Again, if you are giving him mealworms, (not earthworms) cut them up very tiny. He needs to be eating the starter more than the grass and at this stage does not need grit. Once you have him going and are giving him greens, and are no longer making a soup, you can sprinkle a bit of tiny grit on his food. I am expecting 7 of these little things tonight on top of my 18 mallard ducklings. The Mallards are a walk in the park compared to the Wood Ducks.

you are actually buying wood ducks? i was told today you could not order them!
anyway for my sad last UPDATE
i lost the little guy, he was doing fine earlier than i went in about 10 minutes ago and he was dead. i thought he was doing so good becasue he was eating. he was getting into that waterer, but it only had enought water in it to cover the bottom. and i was putting duck starter and the mealworms in it,which is what/when he would eat. right after i took the pics i sat and watched him groom himself like all was fine. i really thought he would make it. ugh, that was very heartbreaking im an offical duck killer!!

:aww

I'm so, so sorry he didn't make it. It's not your fault, you did the best you could. Poor little guy. Sometimes these things happen.

Hang in there and know you tried your hardest.

Actually, you CAN buy wood ducks, but you would need a permit to raise them. Even McMurray has them: http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/product/juvenile_wood_ducks.html And you would probably need to keep proof that you bought them and didn't just raid a nest somewhere. In my state, I would also need to keep records on how many I have, how many I hatched out, who I sell to, etc... and would have to report any escapees within a certain time frame (and I do believe that there are fines if I couldn't find them and recapture them). In order to get a permit, I would need to have the housing prepared and inspected first. Go figure... folks can raise pheasants for release, any other type of fowl need to be reported if they get loose!
