Hi, I'm Woytgirl.:) Last week, a 6 month old barnevelder hen named Cleopatra went broody. Didn't know at first, and was busy, so forgot to collect eggs. We have 2 roos, so the eggs are fertile. We were almost 100% sure that she had sat on the egg for 3 days. So, we decided to let her hatch it. Now, on Day 5 or 6, I candled it. I read somewhere you can see a "bloodspot" in the egg on Day 3, but I didn't see it! :hit
Instead, the yolk had a kind of square shaped edge.
Is it a dud?

It probably is a good trhing that it is a dud, because a week after it hatches, we are leaving to visit family for Thasnksgiving. Still, it would've been cool to hatch.

If hatching eggs is not going to work, I'd suggest, strongly recommend that you break her. The longer her broodiness continues, the harder it will be to break her. You can go to the learning center, and read "hatching eggs 101" for info about candling and discerning embryo growth. Generally, you won't see good development until day 7. There are also articles in the learning center about managing broodies.

Thanks.:) I will candle again tomorrow. I'll also research. If it's a dud, I'll break her.

Cleopatra is hatching someone else's egg. The possible Mom's are: Silver Laced Wyandotte(Alex) or a Cherry Egger(Cherry). Those 2 are 6 months old. The possible Dad's are: Juniper(buckeye) or Vanilla(Easter Egger)

Last time I candled I did it incorrectly, though, so it might be fertile.:):wee

"When you Candle on day 7 there should be some light blood vessels surrounding it and you may see the embryo move. See above and below video. My favorite time to candle! Eggs that are clear should be re-candled at 10 days before tossing. If your not sure and it doesn’t smell leave it! If your egg is colored or a brown egg, it is harder to see through the shell, you may want to wait a few days and try again. Or find a better candler."

So I should see some light blood vessels in the egg, and this is a brown egg, so I will make a thorough check.
I hope it's fertile!!!:fl:)

I checked yesterday, saw the air cell. It was getting dark in the egg, though. We compared it to a egg that was laid that day, the difference in transparentness was amazing! It took a couple tries, but we did see a vein!!! I am so excited!!!:wee:celebrate:yesss::pop:highfive::celebrate:wee:yesss::pop:wee:wee
