I need help on what to put on a box of eggs?

The X-ray the PO uses are not powerful enough to kill germs in fertile eggs. They have to be low intensity to avoid wiping out exposed film. When I designed my packing for eggs, I packed the eggs, put the box on the ground, and took a swing at it with an 8 pound sledge, like you would be whacking a big square golf ball. Knocked it about 40 feet end over end. No broken eggs. The secret of shipping eggs is packing. I put 40 in an 81/2 X 11 Flat Rate Box.

Wow! Did you try to hatch them after that? I'm curious how addled they got from that.

And mass general statement again...*sigh* a lot of postal workers DO care and pay attention when it says fragile.

LIVE EMBRIOS! Thats what I use and it always gets there attention! I put other stuff like handle with care, and Fragile is marked all over it. I have a label that has it all on it. And I agree about the packageing part. If there packed well they have a better change. I have super success rates with my packageing! Heres a link to how I do it:

I bought some Blue Orp. eggs from jimmy47 and said that he was a retired post master. He told me that he NEVER writes on the outside of the box that there are eggs inside of it. He said that when you do that you are almost guaranteed that a postal worker will deliberately kick, drop, or roughly handle the box. Thechickcrew had eggs shipped to her about a month ago that the sender wrote "FRAGILE HATCHING EGGS" on the box and she ended up throwing out everyone of the eggs, because they were either broken or cracked.

If you looked at her box she said it looked like someone had just kicked the side of the box really hard. I have had 3 shipments of eggs so far (I know, that's not to many!) and have requested that the sender only write, "FRAGILE" on the outside and they have all gotten here wonderfully along with having good healthy hatches from them.

I agree, and I've had many boxes of eggs shipped to me, and I've shipped several myself. "Fragile" is a word the PO understands on an official basis. It's not a guarantee by any means, but it's probably the best bet.

That's really odd. When I talked to the people at the processing plant, they said any item not marked fragile will be thrown a distance from the conveyor belt to a rolling cart. Items marked fragile will be walked over.

BUT whatever works for you. I'm just a mean, nasty rural carrier.

I think the words on the box are secondary to the packing!!!! The ones I have gotten... IN bubblewrap or tissue paper.. THEN in a carton.. THEN in a box full of paper scraps, have been the best packaged and have come through looking the best. I think little labels, that say something like "Careful! Unhatched chicks inside! Handle with care" etc, is helpful.... not only because it makes people subconciously equate the eggs with little fluffy babies, but because the label looks professional and I think this makes people want to obey it a little more. That's my 2 cents.... LOL It probably wouldn't make a lick of difference with some "expletive"s...

But, that is what I am planning to do once I start selling eggs

I write LIVE EMBRYOS- DO NOT XRAY on my boxes, and have never had an egg arrive cracked or broken as of yet (knock on wood!).

I think writing LIVE EMBRYOS without writing what kind of embryos they are puts the fear of God into the package handlers.

IMO, if you write fragile, hatching eggs, handle with care, or any of that, you might as well paint a target on the side of the box and write "KICK HERE" underneath it.

I wouldn't say that! We are rural and I like my carrier very much! I think that the problem within the postal system is internal rather than external. I've had three different carriers since I've lived here and have always liked each one of them. I think everyone of us here knows where the problems lie within the postal system.
