We have 4 chickens and yesterday my daughter came in and said that Geraldine was pecking the white chickens butt. The white chicken was trying to lay an egg. She laid the egg then the rest of the chickens ate it! There was a wee bit of blood on her back end afterwards. Today we noticed her back end was very red and swollen, What is wrong and how can I help her? We tried to get a photo

It looks like a prolapse. The first step is to remove the hen from the flock to prevent cannibalization. Reduce the hens feed (or even don’t feed her for one day) to interrupt laying. This will give her a much needed break in laying. I never recommend adding lights to induce laying. If your birds are not laying there is a reason.Wash the protruding organ in lukewarm water and using petroleum jelly, gently press the vent back into the body. Repeat several times as needed. Then treat the vent area with a combination of Preparation H and antibiotic ointment. Preparation-H reduces the swelling tissue and allows the tissue to recede and then i would just do this until the organ is healed. Hope this helps! Good luck!

Thank you. All are in bed so will try and treat in the morning. This would be the least happy to be handled lady!! I hope we haven't left it too late to sort. Where would I get preparation H? Is this available in the uk?
