I need help. Unknown Problem, possibly an infection around the vent?

Hi,

I have 9 Golden Comet hens around 17 months old, and they have not molted up to this point. In the last few weeks, we have been having one of them that seemed to be laying without a shell. I would find mess in the bedding and would occasionally see the chickens pecking at it.

When I went out to gather eggs tonight and feed them treats, I noticed there were only 8 show up. VERY unusual, as they generally try to knock each other down to get to me. When I looked in the coop, one was standing there with her feathers ruffled and was try to talk toward me very slowly. I knew something was wrong, and when I check her I found the following. Be advised: somewhat graphic.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

oh, geez! I really don't know. First thing that came to mind was a yeast infection but I'm really not sure. Can you describe what the black stuff is?

After I posted this I ran over to the local farm store before they closed and they suggested "Vetericyn Wound and Infection Spray". So I came home, washed her really carefully with a soft mist from the hose an applied the spray gel. I think she knew I was trying to help her, because she was very calm.

Once I got her cleaned up, it appears that the other birds are pecking her behind. I am going to clean and treat her for the next couple days, and see what happens. I also think I am going to separate her from the others. If I can stop the pecking, I can maybe start the healing process.

I would suggest using the monistat like some of the others recommended under "Vent Gleet" if the yucky stuff keeps coming out of her vent. That way you treat her inside and out.

Also, when we clean our chicken's behinds we use our kitchen sink sprayer so we can make the water warm. That might help get her cleaner if you have one of those.

Unfortunately, she passed away today but I do appreciate your advice. I have only had chickens for around a year, and haven't had to deal with any health issues up to this point. I will definitely know a little more if this ever happens again.
