I need help

I just recently got 6 white crested black polishes from this lady and all but 2 have died which are roosters. ok so i thought i had 3 girls and 3 boys well 4 have died ( all 3 girls and one roo)
ok so i got some other polishes from the same lady and the two hens died and the 5 roosters survived

Is there a disease she could possibly have that kills only hens? they get droopy wings and slow down and just they dont act like chicks.


1) What type of bird , age and weight. white crested black polishes not sure on weight about 2 months give or take
2) What is the behavior, exactly.droopy wings Only in hens though! and slow down and kinda get "lazy" where they dont really do anything.
3) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma. no
4) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation. none that i can think of i have alittle chicken cold going around in my back yard but they werent out there for too long and its not the same symptoms as the other chickens other then that all my chickens are healthy
5) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all? they were eating regular chick starter from southern states and plain old water
6) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc. normal
7) What has been the treatment you have administered so far? i gave them one drop of vet rx
8 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet? theyre dead im just trying to figure out whats wrong.
9) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help. i wont be digging them up ever. sorry.
10) Describe the housing/bedding in use jut plain old newspaper for now

I can't help you on this one other than to suggest you post again Monday afternoon if you don't get any responses. Lots of people are at the relatives this weekend, have company at their house, or are shopping, so not as much chance for somebody that can help to be on the computer right now. I don't think I'd buy anymore chickens from your current source though.

Hey solarquail. I'm so sorry that this is happening to you. I'm no chicken health expert, but I've never heard of a disease that strikes only hens and not roos. It doesn't sound likely. More likely that the roos are just more vigorous, so they have a better chance of surviving whatever it is that is killing the little girls.

You said they are on regular chick feed. Nonmedicated? If so, just a small bit of advice. Use the medicated chick starter. Always. It can keep your chicks from getting cocci. Which is a huge killer of young birds. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

So the symptoms are droopy wings and lethargy? Nothing else? Did you notice that their feathers were puffed up? Are you certain that their poo looked completely normal before they died? How long were they showing symptoms before they died?

I'm hoping that my response will bring your thread back to the top of the list and someone will see it who can help you more than I can.

Oh, and one more thing. I'd be a bit concerned about the little chicken cold that you have going on in the flock at large. I don't think that there's any such thing as a little chicken cold. Any respiratory symptoms at all are cause for concern, in my humble opinion. The quicker you deal with that, the better.

Sorry you haven't gotten more replies, and I can't add much to help. I have a few Polish but haven't had any experience with the specific problem you are having. I think today's just a busy day with families, etc. and few people have checked in with BYC. Hopefully you'll get more response tomorrow. Good luck...I'll be watching...

Yes, what lauralou said. I would be very suspicious that it is cocci due to the age of your birds and few symptoms. Do a search for "cocci symptoms" or "coccidiosis". You will probably want to get some Corid or Sulmet to have on hand. You would probably at least see some diarrhea with cocci though.

Also what she said about colds--no such thing as a "little cold", so that could be your problem. The younger chicks could be more susceptible to whatever is going around. Perhaps you could describe what is going on with the older birds?

You might want to switch from newspaper to pine shavings or similar, to help keep the poo dry. I wouldn't get any more chicks, especially from that lady! until you get a handle on what is in your flock.

Weve had ALOT of rain recently could this affect it? and its been cold! oh im have to kill the sick ones arent I?

I haven't ever had to deal with coryza, but I remember that gumpsgirl dealt with it last year, so I did a search. Here is a thread to read about the treatment.

You can also do a search with "coryza" as the subject and "gumpsgirl" as the author, and come up with lots of threads.

I don't think you necessarily have to kill all of your birds. The disease is treatable. For most birds. Although it isn't a quick fix. And you have lots of birds. I'm pretty sure that gumpsgirl saved the majority of hers.
