It's not the incubator... it's not the eggs... I really think it might be me.
My most recent hatch was a setting of 14 (not shipped) eggs.
All 14 eggs made it to lockdown... I candled on day 10 and day 17 and they were all really doing great... the eggs were white so I could see the chicks developing inside really well.
Day 21 was great, 7 hatched out beautifully and 1 pipped but then died in the shell. The 7 that hatched successfully all had very clean shells and were very active little guys - they are all doing wonderfully.
So, today is day 24 and there has been no action at all for the past 3 days with the remaining 6 eggs, so I decided to go ahead and end the hatch. I carefully opened 1 of the eggs and was surprised to find a barely alive, but alive chick. The little guy was fully formed, no obvious problems or defects, yolk was completely absorbed and clean... but there was a little blood/fluid and it was gasping for air and extremely weak (barely moving at all). Not really sure what to do at this point, I've left the rest of the eggs (down to 5 now) in the incubator... humidity and temps are still good... but, I don't have much hope for these as I think they are probably going to be in similar shape to the one I opened (and culled).
This is my 3rd hatch. I'm using a Genesis 1588 with auto egg turner... temperature has been a very stable 99.5 degrees... humidity 40% Day 1-17, then 65% Day 18-hatch.
I would appreciate advice on what the pros would do at this point with the 5 in the bator. Also, I would like to know what you would recommend I do differently on other hatches to improve my hatch rates.
Thank you

I am far from an expert but could it be an issue with genetics or nutrition in your breeding stock? Have they all been your own eggs? What was your hatch rate in your last 2 batches? What breed are you hatching? What type of thermometer and hydrometer are you using? Have you calibrated your hydrometer?

Ihave had the same problem 31 to lock down and 21 hatch . this is my 3 try and I have one more set to go but I am confused.any help will be appreaciated.

Hi there justmeandtheflock... thanks for replying

So far, three different hatches with birds from 3 different sources.
Next spring when I'm hatching from my own stock (thanks to the beautiful birds I have hatched!), I'll be able to track genetics and nutrition.

First hatch - 24 (I think) shipped from bycer faverolles eggs... about 1/2 made it to lockdown, 8 hatched (2 of those died), the rest were fully developed and I think I shrink-wrapped them, it was my first hatch and I couldn't keep my hands out of the incubator during lockdown... I learned that lesson... will never open the incubator again during hatch.
Second hatch - 46 shipped eggs from bycer - olive eggers, mottled javas, mille fleur cochin bantams, cbms... again about 1/2 made it to lockdown... 9 OEs, 2 Milles, 3 Javas and 1 CBMs hatched... a few pipped but didn't make it out... a few were fully developed and didn't make it out... I didn't mess with the incubator at all during lockdown.
Third hatch - 14 eggs from a local breeder - naked necks... all 14 made it to lockdown, 7 hatched, 1 pipped and died... and you know the rest of that story from my original post.
I calibrated my hydrometers (I have 2) they are digital... thermometers are also digital (plus I have the one that came with the incubator).

Thanks Julie08!
I'm totally pleased with my sweet little chickies... they are sooooo cute - and I have way more than I "need"!
It's just sad opening up eggs to see fully formed babies and not know why they didn't make it out. Really, I just want to do my very best to give them all the best chance to survive... so I don't have all this chickie mama guilt.
There are so many variables though with the eggs I've hatched so far... I realize now that I might have to wait til I'm hatching my own stock to really be able to figure out what I need to do to be more successful.

So I'm thinking the 5 left in the incubator are probably not going to hatch... I will give them til tomorrow and then I will pull them. I know it's a learning experience to open them up... I will try to do it... but it's just so sad to see the little guys and not know why...
I'm starting another hatch this weekend... so if anyone has some pointers... I'd really appreciate it!

I removed the rest of the eggs from the incubator and opened them... they were all fully formed... just didn't pip or hatch...

I will be setting more eggs this weekend... if anyone has some pointers... I'd really appreciate it!
