Mine
aren't mature yet, but so far they seem really quiet and shy (not pushy). Compared to the others I say that they have "no personality" because they aren't mouthy and the cockerels don't get all up in my business. Only time will tell if they grow into a personality or if they are always so quiet.

We had a particularly brutal summer down here in South Texas this past year. I did have trouble with some of my birds and the heat. I kept fans on at all times, but not misters. I think I will add them for next summer. I lost quite a few silkies of all things. But I did loose one Blue Orpinton hen. Mind you we were in the 100 plus temp for weeks on end.

I absolutely love Orps. I can't say enough good things about them. I have kept them continuously over several years and found them to do quite well in a number of different environments. They did well when we had them down south in a hot, humid environment and they have done well here in a cooler area. They are very adaptable. We have also kept them with various other types of birds and in all sorts of coops/runs and they have always done great. We never have any problems at all with our Orps. They have got to be one of the calmest, most easy going, friendly breeds of chickens.

I think Buff Orpingtons especially are just about as close to the perfect, most ideal chicken you can get (in my opinion, based on what I personally like in chickens of course). Again, I can't say enough good things about them. In addition to having awesome personalities, they lay beautiful large eggs and frequently will go broody. In all the dozens of Orps I have had over the years, I have never had a single bird that wasn't just a delight to have on the farm.

But, living in the south makes me curious....how HEAT TOLERANT are they?????

Ed

I had 1 back a few years ago that did just fine in the winter. They where confined to the coop during winter. WE had an ice storm and it took out their light and froze their door shut. When we finally got in they where all fine. She layed all winter and in the summer she was fine. She was never broody but I didin't give her a chance to be either. I collected eggs several times a day. If she was on the eggs she would get very vocal with me and would yell for at least 10 minutes.

I have to tell you a funny story about her. Her name was Beautiful. She was fairly friendly, not like a pet. She had a favorite laying spot on the nesting shelf, if another was on it she would raise cane and accompany them trying to move them out. On one particular day when I was visiting the chickens there where 2 hens already on that spot and she wanted to lay an egg. So she was doing her best to make them move. They wouldn't budge. So she squatted right in front of them and laid her egg. Before she could recover herself the Jersey Giant had reached out and rolled her egg under herself and sat there like nothing had happened. When Beautiful looked down to see her egg it was gone. She went berserk. She was yelling and sqawking like crazy. The other hen just sat there like nothing was happening. It was a video cam moment for sure. When I left the coop she had gotten down form the nesting shelf but was still very upset her egg disappeared.

She was in a coop with other breeds, Red sex link, Jersey Giant, Sliver Laced Wydonette. She got along well with them but didn't like it too much when I added some 4 month old pullets. The wydonettes where the mean ones.

I have one now that is just huge. She is a splash and friendly except to younger ones. Which I take as to be strange because she was raised with 3 other pullets of the bantam breed which where much smaller than her. She was more of a mother hen to them than a pullet herself. Now she is mean to the younger ones. I blame it on the fact that she is the biggest chicken in the yard and feels to show her dominance.

I've only owned two. Both buffs.

Have one at present.

She won't let the Blue Wheaten Ameraucana roo do his thing with her... we put a couple of her eggs in the bator and they were infertile.

Both have been very docile, not loud, good layers.

My second one is a hatchery bird and has whitish earlobes and lays a real light cream/tan egg. The first one laid a nice brown egg.

Neither have gone broody.

You may want to check out thread by Speckled Hen and hinkj... They have some spectacular orps.... and a goodly number of varieties.

I love American Orp's. Here in RSA people say: Buff Orpington 4 sale, meanwhile it is a mix. And to make it nicer the clubs don't want to answer their e-mails and telephone's. Quarantine is 8 weeks.
