For coturnix, you need supplemental, full spectrum (WHITE) lighting. Not full intensity scorch the feathers lighting, after the sun goes down.
I think people confuse: #1. A light bulb for heat. #2. A light bulb to replace the sunlight. and #3. A full spectrum (White) light source to give coturnix 14+ hours of added light, so they will lay in the winter.
I rarely do #1, never do #2, but always do #3, and all the potty humor folks should just bite your nails
However you achieve full spectrum supplemental lighting (Yes, JJ is spot on with the LED's). It need only be the equivalent light as a 7 watt (White) light bulb in a 10'x10' room, with little to no shadows. Scale that up or down depending on your pen size. You may have to tinker with any setup, and overly intense lighting for to many hours can cause a big fat mess!
Just my 1.75 cents. Inflation and all
