Can I have some advice on getting broody breeds from experienced chicken owners. i’ve got a nice flock, but none of them are brooders.

cochins. I’m ripping my hair out with mine right now because all 4 are going broody at once. they went broody last fall too and were impossible to break! they all sat for over a month and it was their first laying season.

Some more info would be very helpful. What are your overall goals? Silkies are widely known as good and reliable broodies, but they wouldn’t be the first choice for someone trying to establish a free range survival population.

Are you interested in bantams, or Large Fowl? What are your keeping conditions like (cooped or free range)? What’s the temperament of your other birds?

It’s also important to keep in mind that almost nothing you read on here is an absolute guarantee.
So many chicks get produced each year, so many new lines are created, that breed is often irrelevant.
My pursuit of broodiness hasn’t been short; one of the local landraces that were ‘guaranteed’ to go broody, never did for me.
Brahmas are supposed to be somewhat broody; some hatchery lines rarely do. Point is, line over breed is often much more important. Getting birds from a source that can guarantee broodiness, instead of a blanket statement over breed is often much more successful
