I need the “Idiots Guide to understanding combs”.

OK. I'm in. 😁

Chickens have different shaped combs. These shapes are usually down to either the breed of chicken and/or the selective breeding of chickens by people.

While the different types of comb are noticeable in young birds they will be much more noticeable in a mature bird.

As with most things, when people see a chickens comb, they say what they see.

They see a single row of fingers, they call it a "single comb".

If they see something that looks like a row of peas in a pod, they call it a "pea comb".

If they see something that looks like a half opened rose, they (you guessed it) call it a "rose comb".

Take your left hand and with the palm facing you hold it out in front of your face and spread your fingers out wide apart while stretching them to the sky.
Anything that looks like that is a single comb. The classic Foghorn Leghorn cartoon chicken look.

Now with a your hand in the same place close your fingers together and bend them in half towards you, with your finger tips touching the top of your palm.
Anything that looks like that is a pea comb.

Now with your hand in the same place make a fist with your thumb on the outside. Turn your fist so you are looking at it from the top. Anything that looks like that is a rose comb.

How did I do?
