I need to confess!

Yes, I think you're extremely weird to not eat your chickens' eggs.
I'm sure they're highly offended that the fruits of their labor (quite literally!) are not good enough for your palate.

Then again, in a day and age when our "modern" society will gladly deliver all of the food we can eat for a mere pittance, we BYC'ers elect to grow chickens, that we might partake of their eggs and their flesh. I think that makes all of us a bit touched, don't you?

Perhaps it's because I spent the summers of my youth on a working farm, milking cows and goats, collecting eggs, and otherwise "harvesting" what was being grown; I am moved by the process of caring for the animals we shelter, but that only makes me more reverent in the consumption thereof.

I wouldn't say I'm the religious type, but I absolutely rejoice in the bounty of the land. It is magical, to me, that we can provide for the well-being of plants or animals and then enjoy delicious, healthy, "guilt-free" food, as a result. You're taking great care of those gorgeous RIR's, and your girls are working hard to grow those eggs, so don't just give 'em all away! EAT THEM!!

Not to hijack the thread ... but I often get a similar response when I try to share our duck eggs. People often seem a bit 'creeped' out ! I don't understand? Do they think there are DUCKLINGS in there? My one friend still hasn't 'technically' eaten any of the duck eggs I've sent her way (she gives them to a friend who loves them). This past weekend she was saying she still couldn't get herself to try one. Silly girl ... she's eaten breakfast at my house !

Now I can understand one hesitating to eat a duck egg. It is not something different, and something you can buy at the supermarket... but I would be interested in trying one if I had access to one.

Grown adults being squeemish about the same things they eat regularly when purchased from the store?
Allowing their children to get away with not eating something they've previously enjoyed because they've seen for the first time that yes, eggs do come from chickens!?

I really do wonder at the direction our civilisation is going as a whole!!
This thread is just unvelieveable to me!

To not eat fresh eggs in favour of supermarket eggs is just completely ridiculous!!
Every single person who has issues like that needs to take a reality check!!

And then grow up and eat one of your darn eggs!!! (sorry, but it is true)

And then perhaps go to a dairy farm to see how milk gets out of a cow to your table
Go to a slaughter house and see the animals going in and coming out as steaks...
Go to a wheat farm to see what will be your bread growing in a field
And go to an orchard to see that fruit actually grows outside with all the bugs and dirt too!!

And if you still can't eat an egg after that, then you may as well stop eating everything else as well!

I can't wait for fresh eggs! I keep thinking... about how wonderful my girls are treated, how happy and healthy "I" am keeping them, how safe they are in their secure coop, how much I love and enjoy them, how they aren't given bad things to make them grow quicker, lay more ..... and comparing this to battery chickens! I hope that I will never have to use another store egg as long as I live... once my girls start laying --which BETTER be soon...LOL

Every egg so far has made it in to the bator. I gave away the last 9 for hatching. The next 6 will also go into the bator, After that I'm making pickled eggs.

I look at it as my chickens have a good life (i.e. spoiled rotten) and are not locked up in some small cage to crank out eggs. Therefore, by eating my eggs, maybe I'm saving some poor chicken that has that horrible life. (supply and demand, so if I'm not eating, there's less demand)

As with everything you grow yourself, it tastes unbelievably better. I never eat store bought broccoli anymore. It tastes like plastic compared to what you can grow yourself. Green beans, tomatoes, raspberries, etc are the same....you can't beat growing them yourself. My plums from MY trees are amazing, so I will never again eat a store bought plum...they have no taste. And home grown peaches you will DIE for. Eggs are the same, when you grow them yourself they taste so much better. Even my mom who has never had farm fresh eggs told me they are amazing.

My husband and I have never killed an animal. But he wants to raise meat chickens as well. He feels that we (as people) are so disconnected from our food source, that we don't connect that what we eat comes from an actual animal. He feels that if we had to kill our own food, we would not only be more respectful of that animal, but maybe eat less of it, and certainly not waste the meat. Afterall, an animal had to die to provide us that food.

Add in the health benefits of not eating something that's pumped full of antibiotics (or pesticides for fruits/veggies) and there's no reason to not eat the eggs. They simply taste better and are better for you and the chickens. Baking with them is fantastic as well.

So just bite the bullet and TRY them. You won't regret it one bit.

Several people are this way about farm fresh eggs...a bit sqeamish..... try LOTS of salsa and onions........... There is more than one way to eat an egg......... some egg dishes are hard to recognize egg in!

Wow, I did not mean to get so many people up in arms. My point was that I love my chickens, I love to give my friends eggs, but I hardly ever eat eggs in general. I don't think store bought eggs are better, I know farm fresh are probably better. Just making the point that even though I now raise chickens it is kinda weird that I don't eat eggs. I do grow my vegtables and love them so I know about getting from the land. I know I will use these eggs in cooking, but probably will not eat as a main dish. Heck, I eat pop tarts for breakfast and I am in my 50's

If I can gut a deer, believe me, being creeped out by an egg is just plain silly. I don't particularly like chicken either. Rarely eat it. At least my girls don't have to keep looking over their shoulders.........

I don't think we are 'up in arms' LOL--Just stating, we can't beleive that you weren't enjoying the 'fruits of your labor'!!!! It doesn't really matter what the 'rest of us' think ---if they bring you joy---enjoy!!!! Dixie

My message wasn't meant to come across as an attack, just my opinion on my chickens. If you don't particularly like eggs as a main dish, that's what works for you.

Your original post just sounded like you were avoiding them completely for other reasons. (at least to me)

Sorry if you took it the wrong way.
