ugh my rooster got me [ "clawed" me ] in the face, right next to the eye and it bled non- stop for 2 hours, Today im getting a tetnus [sp?] shot to be sure nothing happens but will it be too late? Would an infection of already started

This is an excellent question for a doctor. You can always call your doctor or the local hospital just to get an opinion on whether or not you should come in to see them. A phone call for advice is free.

A tetanus shot may not be needed, but you absolutely should have the cut checked out as soon as possible. An infection may not have taken hold by now. Did you wash it out thoroughly? Use alcohol or a disinfectant?

If it bled that well, and you washed the scratch then any kind of infection is not likely, and tetanus is VERY unlikely.

Tetanus shots are given as a precaution for most any kind of cut or scrape. Tetanus spores are an 'anerobic' microbe, meaning that they only will reanimate into an infection causing pathogen when in the ABSENCE of oxygen. That's why we all associate tetanus with the old 'stepping on a rusty nail'. A narrow puncture wound pushes the spores deep up in the body and a narrow puncture like a pin or nail doesn't bleed much, generally.

However, having said that, if you are due for a booster I'd go in and get it. Tetanus is pretty common in the environment, and is particuarly found around the manure of farm animals - hence the reason they are recommending a booster since it was a rooster that scratched you.

Frankly, I'd be MORE worried about a plain ole bacterial infection from the scratch than tetanus, but I'd go in and get the booster anyway, ESPECIALLY if it's been 5 years or more since your last booster.

the thing im worried about is what was on the roosters foot, we have them tied out in little leashes and this certain one is stupid and stands in his poop all day, we cleaned it with peroxide and alcohol.
Is a booster and tetanus the same thing?

Yes, a tetnus shot would be a booster - just meaning you've already had a shot in the past, so the new shot will 'boost' your immunity to tetnus.

Any type of vaccine can be a booster. In your case your 'booster' will be for tetanus.

Did that make sense?

arlee that makes perfect sense.

chickenboy8: We haven't done anything to him because my dad wont let me do anything to him. He said that the chicken who i now call el diablo [he used to be rig] since he is a fighting chicken it's in their nature and can't blame them for something they do by instinct. I understand that but next time something like that happens ill be having chicken for a while.

One of my old american game roosters cut up my hand. It is what they are breed for. I didn't see the part where you said game rooster.
