My friend has ordered from Meyer Hatchery, and they are due Thursday, May, 20th. She wants to give me one of each breed she gets. She is ordering: Golden Comets, Black Jersey Giants, Silkies, Blue Andalusians, and Silver Spangled Hamburgs. She ordered all hens. ( The silkies aren't, duh! lol ) I already have 2 JG chicks and Silkies, so I know about them. I do need to know a little about the other breeds, though. Thanks so much!

Well...not 100% sure...but I think I have some Golden Comets...

See, I got my chicks from a local (chain) feed store and all they could tell me was that they were "assorted reds" in the bin...they did not even know how old they were exactly. Anyway, it seems Comets would fall under this from what I can tell, and I know by looking at them now as they are fully feathered etc. that I have 3 different kinds of "assorted red" chickens in my flock. A neighbor of mine, who has 29 of her own chickens, lol, MANY breeds...when she came to see my chicks she said, "Oh! You got some Gold sex-linked in here too!" According to the breed index here that is the same thing as a Golden Comet. Soooo, based on that, lol, I am going with it.

Mine are SUPER sweet...but I have hand fed them and had a lot of interaction with them too so I would imagine that plays a roll in it all. I have noticed though that they are a little more shy than the other reds. Like my RIR roo is super curious and is always under my feet, lol, checking out what I am doing...but the ones I think are Goldens...well...they watch from a distance and will warm up after a few minutes but if I make any sudden moves they are off. Also, the ones I think are Goldens are much more quite than my other assorted reds. Not a whole lot of peeping comes from them, lol. Overall, they are more docile I think.

I am not at "egg laying age" yet...but they are supposed to be really good brown egg layers anyway. Don't know how much I have helped, lol, but I thought I would share.

I don't have any of those. You can check all but the Golden Comets out at the Henderson Chart and Feathersite.

The Golden Comet is a sex link chicken, probably a cross between a New Hampshire Red rooster and a White Rock hen. I think Feathersite has some photos of them. Most people think of them as great egg layers, which they usually are, but they are also a good dual purpose mix, good for eggs and meat if you are so inclined. Yours should be a docile friendly hen, bear confinement well, and be am overall great hen for you.
