I NEED to KNOW ANYTHING and EVERYTHING about COCHINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have bantam cochin from Ideal. They have turned out great and they are really sweet. The only ones that I were thrilled with was the golden laced cochins. The roosters turned out really mean. But other than that they are great chickens.

The bantams are VERY hard to keep clean

My standards are very sweet, and docile. I find that tnhey get fat easily, so you have to watch thier weight.

They lay well, have an awesome aray of colors, and are great newbie chickens

If you order from ideal (I have order over 100 cochins from them) I recommend the barred, black, golden laced and blue. The red, white and silver laced were not nearly as pretty as the others (this is my opinion though). These are some I ordered from ideal.

I have a couple of buff (?) Cochin roos...Banties...from Ideal. Ordered as 7 Banties. Very pretty little boys and I'm happy with them. Also got a Cochin black Frizzel. Love her ! Then I have another Banty Cochin that is sort of blk/white barred.
Cochins are sooo cute. Mine have nice dispositions and will order again from Ideal. Was happy with what I rec'd from them.
Happy holidays to all

There is a chicken show in Martietta in January, that near you? You can get face time with breeders of nice birds. Also look at pictures on Cochin websites. There you can get a good idea of what they are suppossed to look like. There is a breeder in Indiana whose website makes me drool; I'll see if I can find it....

Here's
the link to the Marietta show. It doesn't list the 2010 show yet, but the contact info is correct. The date is March 27.

Some of the best examples I've found of good bantam Cochins. If you are serious about raising and marketing them, I'd recommend that you pass on the hatchery stock and get the best you can afford. If you don't, you'll wish you had!

You still have your buff and your white hens? I'm still interested in a trade; several of my birds for your white one! My babies are hatching like popcorn here!

Cochins are wonderful birds. They come in LF and bantam and a multiude of colors and markings. I have LF and bantams and love them both. They are friendly and have wonderful personalites.

Magikchick......Your first hen that you posted is SOOOOO BEAUTIFUL !!!! Love her colors !!! Roo below her is also very handsome.

TO PURESTS: I know some people poo poo hatchery chicks. I'm almost 63 y.o. and certainly am NOT in it to show or hatch chicks. I've bred and shown dogs for almost 40 years and ENUFF !!! I've spent years looking at quality dogs so I realize my chicks aren't show quality. That's ok. My chicks are here for my pure ENJOYMENT ! I love to watch them, listen to them and hear them talk. I'm probably one of the only people that loves all that noise my Guineas make. LOL So for me Ideal, or any hatchery that sends me healthy happy birds is ok. :))
Happy holidays

Hatchery birds are great, it's always fun to pick through the catalogs, especially McMurray or Cackle for me. I intend to order some cool lookin' banties this spring.
I think that the OP was interested in show birds though-unless I read their post wrong, in which case they would most definitely want to purchase birds from a breeder. Indeed, hatcheries can on a very rare occasion throw a nice bird, but chances are that bird will not produce chicks that will carry on the parent birds' traits. This can also be true for birds that come from a breeder, but the chances are much smaller of this happening.
It's not that hatcheries are bad, not at all. It just depends on what your purpose for getting the birds are.

PS-I love how guineas look, but had to kick them outside after the noise they made. They are most certainly unique little critters!
