A guy I know gave me a very big and healthy rooster. He said that he was a RIR. I just want to make perfectly sure that he is before I put him in with my RIR hens. I sure hope he is what I was told he is. He would sure be a good breeder.
The same guy also gave me two red sex link hens. I would like everyone's opinion as to if they are what he said the were.

Here's a pic of the rooster. I named him "Tank" due to his size.

This is a pic of one of the hens. I didn't post a pic of the other one because they look exactly alike. Thanks for the help.

The two barred hens on the roost are likely hatchery quality Barred Rocks. The photo of the red bird doesn't show his full body. His orange color means he isn't a Rhode Island Red, but from the angle that photo was taken, it is impossible to tell. Can you submit a full body photo? Hope this helps a little bit, anyhow.

I have anther question for you. If you dont mind to answer it for me. What is the difference in a hatchery quality Barred Rock and any others?

The Rooster is RIR. Although he tilts toward the production red side of things. The Barred Rocks look to be better than average quality, although photos of a bird on a roost is no way to tell, of course. Since you asked about the difference, I just say this. It takes some studying to better understand the differences, really.

True bred, heritage, true to type birds are only available from reputable breeders. Feed store and hatcheries specialize in inexpensive, available and healthy stock, but they aren't known for top quality. Since you got them from someone, it is hard to say what quality his stock is or from where he got them.

If you have an interest in true bred, heritage quality birds, BYC has terrific threads on them.

You may or may not have any such interest, but here are links to three great threads if you do.

Thanks for the links. I got the Barred Rocks from an older gentleman. He told me that he had been breeding that particlular blood line for over 16 years. I asked him yesterday if he had purchased them from a hatchery. He said that he had bought them from a breeder in Cookeville Tn. So I dont think they came from a hatchery. I am going to put some better pics of them on here today so maybe you can tell more about them. Thanks for the links. They were very helpful. I hope to hear more about what you think of the quality of my Barred Rocks. I will post some pics as soon as I can. Sorry it has taken me so long to reply.
