I need to secure my coop from rats. I know that there is a fencing that you dig down about a foot and bury it along the outline fo the coop but for the life of me I don't remember what it is called.

The number #1 type is chicken fencing you can use is called:

Galvanized hardware cloth - It's the best choice of fencing for enclosing a chicken coop and run area to protect chickens from predators. The best size will be 1/2 inch hardware cloth which should be 19 gauge in thickness. This type of cloth comes in 3, 4, 5 and 6 foot height rolls. The length of the rolls normally come in 5, 25, 50 and 100 foot.

Chicken Wire - This is made of wire woven in a hexagonal pattern. It's great to use in keeping chickens inside an enclosure but does very little in keeping some predators out.

One choice is using both these types of wire fencing which will cut down on overall cost and still allow for protection.

The chicken wire can be first used then hardware cloth covered over that. The hardware cloth should be first buried in the ground of at least 10" deep then up to a 3 foot height. Hardware cloth should also be used over any windows, doors, etc which will be open to the outdoors.

check amazon.com for hardware cloth, it was 1/2 the cost of Homedepot. I appreciated getting the tip somewhere on this site so want to pass it on.
