My Coop
My Coop
My first post here and it is a sad one :-(. We recently started keeping chickens and it has been so much fun. My kids have loved watching them grow and I have learned so much from being on this site. We obtained our neighbors' ok and HOA approval before we ever started this project. Turns out one neighbor has had a change if heart and is very NOT ok with them. She is making us miserable and we don't have it in us to fight with her about chickens. So we have decided to rehome the girls and sell the coop. V sad.

So how do you sell a coop? How much to ask? It is 4x8x4.5, 1/2" hardware cloth throughout, automatic chicken door, Lino floor, never been used (girls are still in their brooder).

We are in Sth Charlotte, NC. Anyone near us want a sweet coop? You'll have to come and get it, I can't help with move. Sigh. V sad.

Sweet coop. Sorry about having poopy neighbors.
I am a fighter by nature so personally I would say I have HOA approval and you agreed to it so there it is.
Can they even see the coop from their yard????
What made them change their minds???

Edited to add:

I am thinking you could put an ad in the paper or on Craigslist and get at least 350.00 for it.

Turn it into a rabbit hutch and get some rabbits. Your kids with love them.

Nice idea. Trouble is the reason we wanted chickens for pets is because we are allergic to furry things, cats, dogs, guinea pigs, bunnies. We've tried them all. My youngest has autism and his drs suggested we get pets as research has shown that pets can help ASD kids become more social. Being allergic to all the regular pets pushed us towards chickens. Would have been awesome but not to be. So sad.

Look into chickens as therapy animals. I think in the US you have legislature in place which would override any complaints if the animal is classified as a therapy animal. I remember reading something about it on BYC, apparently it doesn't need to be a dog or cat, even though they are more common. Lizards and turtles might be something to consider too.

What state are you in, you've piqued my interest in this matter.

We had a big "sit down and come to Jesus" talk with the neighbors. Turns out they are passive aggressive and felt they couldn't say no to our face and so said yes instead, and then worked on getting the HOA to say no, then the other neighbours, and finally the city to say their "no.". None of this worked: HOA said yes, other neighbours don't care enough to say anything, city gave us the permit as we are in compliance. They didn't really have any good reason, they can't see it from their house and chickens would not free range. Until now we have had a good relationship with them, our kids play and go to school together, are on swim team, soccer together etc. felt it was really too stupid to fight with good neighbours over chickens when we are not really that invested. Chickens are nice but we are not passionate about them, only ever thought of them as a way to possibly help our autistic son, but we don't know if it will actually work. If I knew it would make a huge difference for him I would fight tooth and nail, but for all I know he hates chickens. It was just something we wanted to try. Very sad and disappointed wz our neighbours. Sometimes people just suck :-(

We're in NC. They would have absolutely been therapy pets for him and that is the angle we presented to the HOA and the reason they said yes, but as I said before I don't know that it would have actually worked. He doesn't say much and it is hard to know what he is thinking. We've tried fish and reptiles without success - they aren't very social. Chickens would have been perfect. Sigh.

Sorry for how things have turned out.

As a base for calculating cost, I would calculate the cost of materials and add maybe 100-200$ for labor.

There's about $600 in the coop with the hardware cloth. The automatic chicken door was nearly $200 alone. I'd thought of asking $700 but that seems a big number. Not unreasonable then?
