I need to vent about the heat!

Ugh. I mainly just need to vent about the heat.

I'm in NC and the heat index is pushing 110 today.

I've got 2.fans on the coop, 2 fans on the run, tarps hung to block what sun there is ( luckily their castle is build under 3 old oak trees). They have flat dishes with cold water bottles and a little bit of water in them. I've put cold frozen water bottles where they like to sleep.

Tomorrow is supposed to be worse so I'm making huge ice cubes to put out at lunch tomorrow... in front of the fans to make makeshift swamp coolers.

Hosed off the roof and misted down the run.

Refilled all the waterers with fresh cold water.

And they are still hot!

Ugh! My poor birds.

Can I/should I put ice cubes in my waterer for my 4 week old chicks? I have a fan in the 82 degree brooder room, 3 windows & the door open. Outside temps are 90 so I’m very glad the room is a bit cooler.

My sympathies! I've really struggled keeping my girls comfortable at times, and it hasn't been nearly that hot, plus you have all that humidity! I hope you get some relief soon!

I would be freezing those blocks of ice, or given the short amount of time buying a few and hanging out with the hens!!

I wouldn't put ice in the chicks waterer, just make sure there's plenty of water and shade for them to shelter in. Give them deep shade over an area to dust bathe and they should be fine.

I have similar weather here. Had a metal shed built for a rooster habit and it's impossible to keep them in here during the day (interior is roughly 104 thanks to the heatwave).

Especially with chicks, but in high heat, dehydration can be a real life threatening issue. I just add water to my crumbles - about good sand castle consistency. If you think about it, dry food, is naturally dehydrating.
