Hello everyone sorry I haven’t been on for a while. One of my rescue chickens that I have had for a year and a half now hasn’t been looking too good lately. She won’t eat, peck around or play with the other hens. Last night I separated her into a different coop on her own. This morning I went to see her and her head was tucked in her feathers and she won’t stand up or walk. Later on I saw her sitting in her water drinker. She also has vent gleet which I have been trying to cure for the last few months but I don’t think that has anything do to with the situation. Her face was brighter yesterday and she was slightly more active but today she just won’t do anything, Can someone please please help me out I’m really worried about her:hit

I see she's a Golden Comet, they don't have a long lifespan unfortunately. They live generally around 1-2 years, 3yrs sometimes. She looks like she's worn out, & ready to pass.

She was an ex battery hen. I don’t think she was a golden comet, I think Instead she was a RIR. She was almost three years old. Passed away on Sunday morning :hit

Sorry for your loss. She looks like the hatchery RIR, which is basically the same as golden comment or red sex link. The original heritage RIR are dark brown/mahogany colored, and she probably had some RIR, but she was one of the common great egg laying hens developed by hatcheries. Unfortunately, they lay so many eggs, that they can suffer from many common reproductive problems. A necropsy by the state vet can pinpoint an exact cause of death. A home necropsy might tell you if she had lash egg material, cancer, or some other common problems. Respiratory disease could also have been a cause of her eye problem. With rescue birds, they could have any number of problems.

Golden Comets are common as battery hens. The difference between a RIR, & a golden Comet are that Golden Comets are a Red Sex-link, & commonly have white in their tail area. RIRs are a Red Columbian with black tails, & are purebred. The Heritage type are a Dark Red/Mahogany. Hatchery RIRs are often a rusty red.

Sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry for your loss. She had a good life with you. Lot's of love and good care. A rescue hen couldn't ask for a better way to live out the rest of her life and now her little soul is flying free. Keep on helping those in need. :hugs
